HID conversions - anyone done it ?
Discussion
Im a believer that hids are supposed to be in a proper projector lense within the head light. This does give a definitive cut of for the light beam.
On my mr2 I just kept the reflector lenses and invested in osram night breaker's, because seeing people who have fitted hids to reflectors and especially think its cool to blind others with a bad light setup (ie blue) is a pet hate of mine. I drive at night for a living so see a lot of this.
However, on my works car, mk3 mondeo I invested in some projector headlight units and fitted 35w hids with a standard colour of 4300k which is perfectly white enough for visibility in dark rainy weather.
The hids made a big difference with clarity of the road aswell as the distance that the light is projected over.
To be honest i use full beam alot less now thanks to the hids and projector lenses.
Oh and if you do fit anything like this remember to get your friendly garage to get the beam angle and hight set properly so your not lighting up the moon.
One last thing though is that I read somewhere the law in 2013 will require hid lights on a car to be self levelling and to have washing units built in to keep them clean so not to distort the beams of light?

You could upgrade the power of the standard bulbs from 35w or what ever yours are rated at too some 100w bulbs. But id check the wiring for the bulb is up for the job. The projectors should give a good pattern for what ever bulb you put in shouldn't they?
Yes the legality will become a problem when the mot law changes for the hid fitment.

I've done quite ilterally hundreds of aftermarket HID installs and my input is this.
If you don't have projectors in the car, the HID kit is just annoying. The reflection is absurd, it'll only p
s off oncoming drivers and drivers ahead of you alike. The light output is pretty much lost and it just looks silly and boy racer.
If you've got projectors in the car, the HID kits can be great if you purchase from a reputable company and purchase for light output and not to have "purple lights". I've had too many customers come in, say "I WANT REALLY COOLZ LOOKING BLUE LIGHTS" and then come back within a week complaining they can't see anything. A nice 6K - 8K HID light looks and performs great inside a projector housing. Many manufacturers are offering lifetime warranties on their bulbs and ballasts as well now.
My 2 cents!
