Need to sort out a set of winter wheels and tyres for our newly purchased 2002 rav4, the road tyres aren't going to be much good if we have another snow fall that we had a couple of weeks ago, especially where we live.
Just want a set of steel rims and decent winter rubber, any suggestions etc.

The entry level RAV 'nv' came with steels, so if you could get hold of a set of them it would be your easiest option I reckon.

If you get a decent set of AT's, you may not need them. I used to run Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo II's on my Isuzu in the states, and used them offroad, in the red hot summers, and the fking snowy winters, and they were superb. They have the siping for snow and ice, and good tread for offroad, and road driving. Very little road noise, and will do you all year round, especially in the UK. We used to get a few feet of snow every week where I was.

It was an option just to buy some decent all round tyres, but we had them on our old rav and the road noise was annoying, especially on longer journeys, plus the tyres are ok for a good few thousand miles, so it would be a waste just to remove them.
I suppose it would be good to have the best of both worlds, good winter grip with low road noise.

love the user name smile

Our Rav4 has Dunlop m+s tyres on it and I have used it in the snow for the last few years and it has never got stuck, although it is a Mk1 and has a centre diff lock.
A freind of mine bought a 2002 Rav about a month ago and stuck winters straight on it

Great minds and all that.
We had the earlier rav up until a few weeks ago, then someone kindly drove into it and wrote it off, fantastic bit if kit in the winter, it would go places that 30K 4x4's would get stuck in, but I think a lot of that was due to the tyres, hence why we want a similar set up. The later one has got more road going rubber on it and there's less road noise, the older one was a tad noisy.
What sort of tyres did your friend fit, and how does he find the road noise.

Got Dunlop SP winter sport 3D on my rav mk2. There wasn't a great deal of choice when I was looking for tyres a few months ago. These Dunlop's though have got good reviews so thats why I choose them.

I can't tell you if they're any good though, this is the first time I've had to fit winter tyres and its also my first winter using the rav.
