350Z and 370Z Thoughts
Discussion
So the Lotus has to go. My injuries are getting the better of me, and despite servoing the clutch, my ankle kills me. So an auto it is.
I have been looking at a lot of cars and I would appreciate your thoughts on the Z's. Is the 370 that much better than the 350? What is the handling like (coming from an Esprit, don't forget!)? Is the noise from the tyres as bad as has been reported? Can you get an uprated exhaust for wind down the windows in tunnels?
Any other comments, particularly appertaining to the auto.
Thanks Paul

Good machines.
Don't listen to anyone "on the Internet" who says the 370z doesn't handle. Utter b
ks. Not one credible review says anything other than positive about the handling. Coming from a lotus it will no doubt feel very different to you.
I went to a 370z from an s2000 and I think it's great.
Again, if your asking if the 370z is better than the 350z then the quick answer is yes. Again no review I ever came across said otherwise. It's quicker, more efficient, better interior, bla bla bla, HOWEVER, the value of 350zs at the minute is very tempting for buyers and it's up to your financial circumstances if you think the 370z is worth the extra.
One thing I've noticed since joining the pistonheads community is that people repeating hearsay is rife. It really is.
Mostly it's from German car owners that think that Gernan cars don't depreciate anywhere near the same and the other is BMW fans that seem reluctant to accept that the 370z is very similar in performance to M cars.
From first hand experience it is and your getting jap reliability and servicing costs that don't result in your pants dropping to your ankles.
Mines manual so have no experience of the auto however EVO mag had a long term tester which was an auto and from memory they were singing it's praises.
One thing folk DO say on Internet about the 370z is the sound track isn't as loud.
I don't know exactly what it is, but it IS as loud as the 350z and it DOES sound as good (if not better) but NOT in the cabin unfortunately.
For the folk your driving past, at full tilt it sounds great. Inside the cabin and your missing out a bit unless your going through a tunnel or have both your windows down.
This link is a standard 370z with mic outside the car. You can hear it sounds decent standard.

That won't matter to most people, but if your quite tall it does
I'm 6 ft 1" and the seat goes back even further should I need it to. I know that's not particularly very tall these days but it's it's taller than the average. That won't matter to most people, but if your quite tall it does

Thanks for all the replies. I think the 370Z is the better bet for me as there are more autos. I agree with the blue paintwork, mmmm. But there is a yellow one too.
Anyway, probably going to look at a 2 year old 370 on the way back from the SS. At £20K with only 7K miles and a year of the man'frs warranty....

Read this months EVO magazine where their parting comment is that a late model 350Z would be their preference over the 370Z, but this is more on driving dynamics than outright performance.Edited by elementad on Thursday 14th February 21:28
Both excellent choices BTW.

Interesting, seeing as the 370 has a shorter wheelbase and less weight. Both excellent choices BTW.
Also going to try a Maserati 4200 and Gransport....

Isn't the auto 'box in the 350z a bit, well, s
t in comparison to the 370z?
Depends if that's worth the extra (circa) £10k, or not, only you can answer that...
I can't comment on what the auto 'boxes are like to drive, as I've never driven one, but an auto 350Z will be a 5-speeder and a grey-import only - Nissan GB only sold manuals in the UK.

The 370Z auto, which is sold by Nissan GB, has a much more modern 7-speeder with flappy paddles.
Busy weekend - two roadtests and SS!!
Drove a Maserati 4200. Not me - nothing to do with the CC gearbox, but just doesn't have the wow factor to me.
Tried a nearly new 370Z auto, the dealer took my details, handed me the keys, and "off you go and enjoy yourself!".
What a car. Needed the traction control.... love the throttle blip on downchanges.... very comfortable seats.... great engine... BUT, only niggle is that it is a bit, well, plasticky inside. But 20 grand for a 2 year old with 7,000 miles....
Yes, I liked it. So does the MILF. Anyone want to buy a V8 Esprit?

As someone who has owned both 350z and 370z, they're surprisingly different drives. Noticeably so.
The 350 is more raw, with more immediate throttle response, louder exhaust and a more dated interior. It's lively when you push it and a great drive.
The 370 is more refined, more stable and more of a GT car. Noticeably quicker, more settled at speed and generally more assured to drive. Throttle response is slower, exhaust is embarrassingly quiet but the general quality inside and out is much improved. Wider tyres, more power and just feels more premium. If both cars had identical power output, the 370z would lap quicker, I reckon. It just feels like they took all the learnings from the 350 and improved it.
I loved the 350 hugely. I love the 370 too, but there is a different experience driving them that's tangible, but hard to describe.

I had a 350z GT (2007 with the VQ35DE 'rev up' engine) until last week, and now I have a 370z. I agree with the sentiments shared so far. Both great cars but the 370 is noticeably more refined.
I'm 6'4" and I do fit in both cars comfortably with the seats as far back as they go.
If you are looking for a 350z I'd recommend trying out the different engines through the model's lifetime as they are different beasts! The 313 bhp 'VQ35HR' on the late 2007 onwards cars has a twin intake, a nice free revving feel and is identified by a bulge in the bonnet. The VQ35DE 'rev up' at 296 bhp or thereabouts has lots of shove and was an absolute blast to drive. This one was a mid-cycle update to the engine that brought a 7k redline.

Having driven the 370z, do you notice the raspy engine note on higher revs? I was told this is due to the VVT-L design. Drove a Maserati 4200. Not me - nothing to do with the CC gearbox, but just doesn't have the wow factor to me.

Had one for a day and I like it (except for engine/exhaust note and interior as mentioned). The blue is really stunning on the 370z...

Didn't notice the rasperries.... But, as I still look at a lot of different cars, I still ponder the plastic interior and the potential depreciation.
Funny, the one I tried, the dealer said the price was non-negotiable. Only 2 weeks later he dropped the price by a grand. If only he had been a bit more amenable to do a deal on the Esprit, it could have been in my garage by now....

OP, what did you end up with?
Myself and Mrs Big are heading off to Europe for a road trip in the summer and have decided we want a convertible for the journey. I've been browsing the classifieds and have come across 370z convertibles at circa £20k for low mileage tidy cars.
My Mrs drives autos so that's what we'd have to go for but I did test drive one of the auto coupe's when they came out and thought it was pretty good.
Anyone run one of these? We've got daily drivers so we'd be looking at the 370z as just a fair weather tourer which I can throw around a bit, I'd like to hear peoples thoughts on these.
The only downside I see is that it may be difficult to shift on after the summer.
