Hi all, thinking about buying an EVO 5 or 6 as my daily driver, I do about 200 miles a week and have £6000-£7000 to spend. Not sure if this is a good idea or not as i could see this ending up costing me a lot of money if i get the wrong car but i've always wanted an Evo.

I used to have a 6 and tbh I'd rather stick hot pins in my eyes that use one as a daily driver

Not that your mileage is that great but you might be able to stretch to a 8 and they are a much nicer daily drive

See if you can go out in one and see what you think

Thanks for that, i guess as ever i need to go and drive some different cars and see what i think. My reason for looking at 5/6 is that it seems you can get a better car for that budget.

As a weekend toy yes. Daily driver nope. You will incur costs and only get 20 mpg then rust will creep up on you if it's not clean and looked after. An evo8 standard model would be far better and in budget (just) so you can abuse it as a daily car without worrying.

Alternative.......difficult. Mmmmm older m3 ? Or a 330i ? Maybe a focus ST with a remap ?

I'm not helping am I

Of course you could just buy the ego 5/6 and only plan to keep it for say 8 months, then change it before it starts costing you ?
It also depends on your traits, I always spend money making my cars perfect, if your happy with the odd fault, then you may be fine.

I've got a high powered Evo 6 as a toy/weekend car. But if I was able to drive to work, I'd happily use it everyday.
Of course this wouldn't be cheap in terms of petrol, and it's not a comfortable ride if that's what you're after, but personally I love the harsh ride and the fact it feels a bit like a Go Kart!

If you had to rely on your 6 for work , you'd have been sacked for poor timekeeping by now smilesmilesmile

ok well I’m not too worried about petrol costs and I’m not looking for anything to highly modified as it would need to be pretty reliable.
I currently drive a 2.0 TFSI A3 Sline so the ride can't be any worse than that it's awful!
I would of thought you could make up time in an EVO if you were running late...Lol

Thinking of putting my slightly modded 8 up for sale at the moment.

I'd be after just over the top end of your budget though.....

Just try it. Buy sensibly with that budget and you won't lose on it. You may even get a TME within that budget.

You'll get 10mpg less than your A3 and need to run it on vpower or momentum plus you'll be filling it up at least weekly only about 200miles to a tank on a 5/6 even at stock power levels

Good if you're on a diet though as they make your fat bits wobble. Good incentive to stick to it biggrin

My guess is, as you are considering an evo, MPG is not really too important.

Frankly mate... get it done!!! You'll get a minter for that money. Just be sure to have some aside in case something major goes wrong. But to be honest, standard/lightly modified cars are reliable enough.

the later evos are better daily drives, but earlier ones are far more exciting.

thanks for the offer but i need to sell/PX my Mrs MR2 when i buy so a private sale may not be the best option for me. Unless you want a mk3 MR2?

There is a buyers guide on the mlr , rust is a real issue with the 5 and 6

I'd look for a car on the mlr from a member with plenty of posts

Good history is essential

Yip, I know a guy with his own bodyshop and I mentioned I would love a 6 TME and he said to look out for rust. I thought he meant imports not undersealed correctly, but he said no, he had a TME coming in shortly for repair (and a full respray IIRC) with rust under the headlining, certainly made me think.

thought the evo 5 was a solid car frown was looking for one as a daily driver/2nd car for work.Had a scoob for 11 years and had no real issues with rust on that.....but the rear arch was just starting to go....from inside.my current car is not really a daily driver so thought an evo would fit the bill.oh well will keep looking

As stated above, I'd take an 8 if I had to get an Evo for daily use. The VI is my favourite, but with the older, flakier bodywork, it will be fecked from the salt used daily in this country.
