Considering a GTR
Discussion
Hello People,
I'm generally a bad boy when it comes to buying and selling my cars... I've had 7 cars in as many years. 2 Porsches, 4 BMWs and counting... Now I'm not sure if this is down to having a short attenti - erm what was I saying? Or, it could be that' I've just not found the right motor?
I'm currently running around in a 335d (for which I've been considering a remap), but today I went for a test run in a 59 plate GTR. What an amazing motor - It sounded incredible, stuck to the road like nothing else, and I think I'm in love - all over again. This one has been fiddled with, it's got a stage 1 remap and Miltek exhaust with 570bhp, and it's not an unreasonable amount of money either.
The thing is - Could I use it as a daily driver? Is it a bit of overkill? Am I having a (another) midlife crisis?
Your thoughts?

Do it mate, they are fantastic. Not to every ones taste but its the first car I have owned where I don't look at the classifieds thinking what shall I get next.
A quick remap and a YPipe really brings the beast alive. Freakin awesome and more fun than my old Noble or Porker Turbo.
Can't comment on the sail aspect as I run a shed during the week. But I do know others over on GTROC that do with no issue. Well other than fuel lol.

I bought a 59 plate in December as a daily driver, and am very happy with it. It's not a BMW or a Merc for cruising around in, but as long as you know what you are buying I don't think there's much else I'd rather be in daily.
i can get wo kids in the back (I'm not too tall...). It makes noises when going into gear, tramlines a bit, but every drive is far more of an event than a 'normal' 4 seater.
It's got all the toys as standard and is very very quick!
I looked at private cars classifieds, which looked a little cheaper, but ended up with a 12k mile NHPC (Noble) car for £40k, which included a full set of tyres, a 3yr service and a year's warranty. Overall this seemed better value than private cars, and reduces running costs for 12 months at least.
Like poster above, I change cars all the time (came from a quattroporte GTS), but can't think of a better daily driver now. I will most likely upgrade to a new one next year, unless the new Maserati Ghibli breathes fire!

Great cars, I bought mine Feb. last year and use it most days. I had it modded to stage 4 and also have had downpipes fitted which improves the sound of it. Definitely worth switching to Michelin Pilot Super Sports when the tyres are worn and keep an eye on the OEM discs which are prone to cracking if the car has been tracked. Two independents with a very good reputation are Litchfields and Severn Valley Motorsport, both are much cheaper than main dealers for servicing etc.
Wow BarryP,
What can I say? I was blown away by the car, absolutely blown away. Harsh ride in sport mode was compensated by awesome acceleration and grip, which in turn was complemented by the amazing handling. I seriously want one.
The only problem I have is the servicing and general everyday maintenance requirements... I drive approximately 23,000 miles per year and at current calculations that's the equivalent of 4 services and 3 sets of tyres. I'm not sure that I can warrant that kind of spend.
Now, if it was a second car then yes... I'm thinking a diesel shed for the weekdays and the GTR for the weekends. I just need to convince the Mrs that we need a 3rd car!

Had mine for 4 months, drive it every night, love it!
The servicing schedule was changed from MY11 onwards, it's now a more sensible 9k/12mnths interval.
Tyres are expensive from Nissan, around 2.2k, but Michelin pilot super sports which many owners fit are half that price.
It's pretty much Jap reliable, mine's still standard but has a 0-60 of 2.8 secs (power was increased from MY11 onwards) so don't really feel the need to remap to stage 1 yet. Never had more fun on 4 wheels

23,000 miles a year is just about doable on MY11 cars but personally I wouldn't recommend it unless you only plan to keep car for around 2 years.
Don't get me wrong, GTR is reliable car but IMO its not really designed as a commuter car hence why it's rare to find a GTR with high mileage.

Hi
Bought mine new in June 09 - now has about 63k on it - so it does 16-17k a year. I travel all over the UK with work and use it whenever I can. I do have another car that does about 10k a year - I use this when I know I have to park in a multi story car park or leave it in an a dodgy hotel car park overnight, have to pick something big up, or go to my local supermarket.
Otherwise I take the GTR - Running costs have been "as advertised". Out of warranty I now get it serviced every 9k, Litchfield prices are half that of Nissan, Tyres last 12k+ miles (winter tyres last forever), Yokohamas at £1k for four are fine for me. Only problems have been all the normal ones - bellhousing rattle fixed under warranty - gearbox solenoid clips...long story, £700 - I've got symptoms of problems with the display and key / steering lock, but both of these have been extended to 5 years under the warranty.
I Expect to keep it for.....several years. It's a brilliant thing - go and buy one

I know a GTR is a big car, but has/does anyone park theirs in multi-storey car parks? Current 350z (albeit lowered) had a nightmare in a multi-storey once so my next car has to be more practical according to the missus! I'm not averse to parking the other end of the car park, it's just whether it can get up and down the ramps, through the slim ticket barriers without hassle.
