A guy in my village is selling his GT-4 ST205. Its a car I have always like not least due to its rally heritage but also as it is a bit of an underdog in the mid 90's Jap cars.

He doesn't want too much for it as it is has 130k on the clock and is a little rough around the edges (dent on one of the front wings and a couple of scratches etc...) but according to his advert it is mechanically sound. It wouldn't be used as my everyday car but more as a weekend/track car that I could have some fun in without really worrying about if it broke. I know there must be a few forum members who have owned these and I'm just looking for some advice on what to look out for. I know that they are reliable for the most part and that the front suspension is the weak area with the "8-links" but is there anything else to know of? There is no mention on his ad if the clutch has been changed (I'm guess it has) but would this be a huge job with it being 4WD?

Any input would be appreciated.

My mechanic hates gt4 clutches but he's getting used to them now as he has a few of my friends gt4s to do.

Yes the clutch is a pita.

The clutch is a bh.

For track/fun a GT4 wouldn't be my first choice, and I loved my GT4 like crazy, but it felt like more of a GT car than a rally car.

Steering lacks feel tbh and it's a bit too heavy as standard, though it is built like a bank vault.
Lots of understeer, I got coilovers and a whiteline ARB to improve the balance and that helped, ride was really good on standard suspension though.
Can be made very quick, they are designed to be modified imo, a little underwhelming from the factory but all the ingredients are there.

More capable than fun imo, test drive one before you buy.

Maybe try GT4OC/DC or celica-club for a buyers guide.

as mentioned join the GT4OC or similar.

These were an expensive car new (c £30k plus) so can cost a few £££ if you need to carry out repairs.

Clutch is a hard job as its 4WD but one of the specialists will deal with it no problem.

Fig 8's, lower arm and banana arms last 60k - 70k miles but will cost about £1000 to replace both sides.

Easy to tune to 300 - 320bhp, any more than that and its big money with forged engine, bigger turbo, stand alone ecu and ebc, uprated fueling and fmic.

Mine runs at 340bhp at the flywheel, great car but can be expensive if you get the bug.
