I have one. It's very quick. I love it. 
Touch wood, the most reliable car I've had - covered 12k+ and only replaced a droplink and a couple of rack ends. I change the oil every 6k (fresh oil today) and run it on super unleaded. Returning about 23mpg with very few motorway miles, it can drop an awful lot lower than that though!
Comfortable seats and not horrendously loud so can be a surprising cruiser, though mine is lowered and polybushed all round with uprated ARBs so it's not what you'd call comfortable.
Have considered selling a few times for something a bit more 'grown up' (I'm nearly 28 and it's my daily) but on the right toad at the time it's high on impossible to beat for the price.
A lot of bang for your buck. Take your time to find a good one - there are some rotters about - and you won't be disappointed.
ETA - Apologies, I went off on a rant without even knowing which MR2 you're considering! Mine's a Rev 3 Turbo.

As has been said, IMOC and MR2OC.
Imo, the former tends to be better if you looking for s/h parts.
The latter for social activities - i.e. regular meets/run outs etc.
The main activity north of the border is centred round Fife and Perth & Kinross
If your buying a Mk3 roadster then consider joining the MR2ROC as well.

Rev5 UK n/a with a turbo conversion (owned for 5 years).
Rev 4 JDM turbo (owned for 4).
I don't know of any other car which can equal it in the £/performance stakes.
