Micra k11 project maybe

Hi folks, I'm thinking about doing a fun low-budget project car based on a k11 Micra. We had a 998 non-pas one a few years ago and really liked it.
My inspiration is the Mini tuner enthusiasts from the 1960s. I know I could buy a powerful car for £1k but am keen on a low-key Micra.

Looking for advice and links from those who know, is the 16v 998 best to start with, etc.

Edit, my tuning background was with crossflow and Pinto rwd Escorts and 3-litre Capris. So I'm a bit stone age but I like the idea of an oldskool Micra.

Probably best to start with the 1.3 or 1.4?

Ironically, lots get broke as donors for engine swaps into classic Minis!
