The Subaru boxer engine has a very distinctive sound which I have always loved. I was chatting to mate of mine who absolutely hates the sound they make, saying they sound like something’s broken.

Love it or hate it?

I think they sound awful but then I also dislike the (superficially similar) sound of a cross-plane V8. Personally I prefer smooth sounding engines.

Of course it's an open question whether "awful" is better or worse than "dull".

More interesting than most inline fours but I’d prefer to listen to a 3 cylinder or 5 or more cylinders than most four pots.

Always thought they sounded like they were running off a cylinder.

Love the sound they make.

Summer days with windows open is one of life little pleasures.

In my WRX the sound is piped into the cabin through a tube.

Very low tech.

No electronic fakery through the speakers.

I like the sound a Scoob makes but agree on the cross-plane V8's. At normal revs I think they sound pretty cr*p.

I love the sound of an impreza.

An e46 m3 engine sounds broken to me.

Thankfully they are becoming rarer so don't hear them much anymore.

Prefer a V8 myself.

They definitely don’t sound the same when they’re only running 3 cylinders - I know from personal experience smile

I have a few modded ones near me which I hear driving up and down regularly.
I still Love the sound though, I love the fact you can tell instantly it's an Impreza (ok it could be a Forester or whatever but probably not).

Direct from the exhaust outlet?

Love the boxer rumble cloud9

I'm on second Scooby. Current WRX has a Cobra centre section and Hayward & Scott backbox. Not too loud, but just a nice rumble!

Mine makes a turbine-like whine sound when climbing the revs in second

I wish.

It's piped the right hand side of the engine bay near the turbo and into drivers footwell.

Never liked the burble very much. Dad had a 1st gen Forester turbo and that sounded much nicer, without the silly manifold.

Some of it probably depends on if you can remember when VW Beetles and vans chugged their wheezy way around the roads with a very similar gerdug-gerdug gerdug-gerdug noise.

Heretics, burn them in DIESEL now.
