Bonnet Release not working Mazda 3

I have a 57 plate Mazda 3 MPS and the bonnet release isn't working. When I pull it, it feels like the cable is stretching, the cable is still attached to the pull lever as I can feel it underneath.
Doesn't seem possible to get to the bonnet release via the grille either, short of trying some plyers on the cable, are there any alternatives to getting it open?
