Impreza, too fast!
Discussion
As much as I love my scooby I find myself going at silly speeds round the b roads of North Norfolk, forgot I had my daughter in the car the other day and found myself going frankly too fast! Feel I need to slow myself down. Plus the money would come in handy! So what I need is some quick advice as the prices seem to be all over the shop, what do you think I should advertise it for:
1999 V reg Impreza Turbo Wagon 68,500K, just serviced, FSSH. 3 Owners, totally standard. A few dings in doors, and a dent just by the fuel cap, left by some generous person in London (could get this repaired for £395 with Subaru dealer). Candy Red. in good condition.
I was thinking £6k or less without the repair, do you think I should get this repaired beforehand, any opinions?

I think the car is less to blame than you are TBH...
If you drove recklessly with your daughter in the car (not saying you did, but you profess to 'too fast') then your attitude needs to be put into check, regardless of your car... because even a slow car can be driven too fast for the conditions, brakes or road...

that is a fair comment, I would not call it reckless as it was a well sighted staight piece of road but I was going faster than I should have done so yes you are correct re my attitude. But I find this car gives you a sense of security that is not really there and you find yourself going faster than you realise, get carried away then look down at the speedo...I find when i am driving a rwd car for example I go much slower as I am aware of the lack of traction etc, so yes I have to sort my attitude out with regards to b roads, but I also feel the car is too easy to drive and the speeds at which you have to be going to have any kind of fun are just too high...
Imprezas are stupidly easy to drive very quickly indeed. Mine also makes me a bit more agressive as well. When I drive my old cav I pootle along at the speed limit without a care in the world. Sit me behind my STi and all of a sudden I'm a man with a mission. However, compared to what my girlfriend turns into when driving it I'm quite restrained!
Regarding the car price..... £5500 seems about right to start a private sale. If you're going to get it repaired it has to be invisible, otherwise get an estimate and leave it at that. For 5k you can't expect perfection.
All the best with the sale.

IMHO, most modern cars have their limits way to high and are too cosseting. If you want to have any sort of fun, you need to be driving like a lunatic.
My old Mk2 Fezza was a complete hoot at anything over 40 mph, mostly due to having almost zero grip and rattling like a tin of marbles

I find I have to constantly keep myself in check, I never had this problem with my previous car (E30 M3)or any other car. I took a new Impreza out for a spin last month and that was even worse in terms of not feeling the speed you are doing.
Re price that is roughly what I was thinking. Thanks for the advice.
My scoob has become a second car precisely because of this. At normal (read legal) road speeds it's just noisy and frustrating. By time it becomes fun your license is in serious peril and if you do have an accident it is all going to end along way from where it started. Consequently I now have a Discovery that trundles around a lot less further above the speed limit with a wafty V8 and Classic FM clearly audible. I do get frustrated by the constant comment, "it's so easy to drive a subaru fast" It's easy to drive them faster than most other cars, it is just as hard to drive them as fast as they can go as any other car.

hit nail on head, not comfortable enough to cruise so only comes into it's own when going for a blat which as I get older I feel the need to less and less
I am not quite sure what you mean by end coment!?

That's the frightening thing, because its quite a large saloon car you don't get the feeling of speed. Give it an empty road and driver concentrating on what's ahead and 3 figures are easy to stray into without really meaning to.
Its also very easy to stray into 3 figures on purpose (or so I've heard).
I think rustybin means that imprezas are as hard to drive on the limit as any other car, its just that an imprezas limits would have you shreiking on a public road.

Yes. It is not so much on this thread but most Impreza threads you get someone along (generally TVRists or Porscheists just to provide an inflammatory generalisation) who says "its not rear wheel drive or normally aspirated, anyone can drive one of those quickly" where as the truth of the matter is that at the limit they can be even more treacherous than a RWD car with the engine in either wrong place.

ah I see good point, they just give you an incredible sense of false security, don't get me wrong I love Subaru's and if I do not get a half decent price I will keep it and probably run it into the ground but I am just not getting any petrolhead satisfaction from it unless I am going at silly speeds, I used to get more fun out of my old London runaround (1.2ltr Ren 5) as you could go round a wet roundabout at 20mph and the car would be on the limit, good and relatively safe fun! I want my E30 M3 back!!!!

exactly and when you are not in the mood the whole thing feels distinctly underwhelming, not very cossetting and frankly everything rattles, although interior wise nothing has ever broken! Frankly I crave something with slightly lower limits and a bit more of a challenge.

I have a solution. Buy four space saver tyres for when you want a little slip and slide fun then put the proper rubber on for when you need to be at the top of a mountain in Wales in an hour and a half.
