I think in japan they stopped selling the 1.6 when the 1.8 came out so that would make it the higher output.

cheers, Ive heard that to, but do you know if there any visual checks to determine the power output? having only driven my 1.6 and another 1.8 I dont know how the 1.6's compare with each other. is the 90bhp that much slower or less revvy?

it'll be the latter. the 90hp were only for UK 1996 onward cars

The 114bhp 1.6 engine was replaced with a 130bhp 1.8 engine in 1993.
In 1994 the 88bhp 1.6 was introduced alongside the 1.8 to be cheaper to insure.
So if your car is a 1993 1.6 it will be 114bhp (well probably nearer 100bhp by now but that's a different topic altogether).

Theoretically no.

However the rev counters on the jap ones don't go into the red until higher...

BUT I'm told the rev limit is the same.

I have been told that the ecu on the jap cars differs slightly and gives a few more horses than the UK cars, don't know if this is true or not tho.......

Not true. The ECUs on the 114bhp 1.6s are exactly the same.

On some Japanese cars, especially Imprezas and the like, it is true though. Mainly due to them being mapped for the Japanese 100Ron fuel.

'mapped'?

I thought manualy adjusting the timing belt was as technical as ti got.

Which you can do (by a couple of degrees) to a UK car & run on higher octane fuel?

Up to 1993 jap import 1.6 and UK spec 1.6 engines were identical.
The 1.6 was discontinued in 1993 and replaced with a 1.8.
In 1994 the 88bhp 1.6 was introduced in UK but was never sold in Japan where they just had the 1.8.

So if it's a 1.6 up to 1993 it'll be the 114bhp engine. If it's a 1.6 from 1994 it'll be 88bhp regardless of the market it was sold in.

The 1.8 engine also went through a few changes. At various stages in it's life it's output went through 128, 130 and 133bhp though I'm not sure in which order. I think it started with 130, went down to 128 after some emission control changes and back up to 133 later in it's life though I could have that in the wrong order.
