Hi All,

myself and a friend are thinking of getting a 'cheap' trackday car, I saw a 93 plate mazda MX6 - 2.5 V6, anyone have one and what are they like performance wise. Is this a ok car for sub £1K that could be stripped etc and used just for track day events?

Comments would be appriciated!!

cheers!

Cheap Nissan 200SX will probably be more fun, and tuneable...

Under the skin the MX6 is basically identical to a Ford Probe of the same age. If thats your idea of a good base for a track car then go right ahead.

enough said!!

Golf Gti or 205 think will be a better option. I was just thinking of power per £'s!

Probably 160ish bhp from the V6 - however you also get a soft, not particularly light front wheel drive as part of the package.

Something like an MX5 would be a good choice too, light fairly cheap RWD, haven't really heard anything bad said about the way they drive.

I've just bought a mk1 mr2 with the intention of using it for trackdays. It was only 500 quid and is in pretty good condition. I did consider a 205 gti but the MR2 is mid engined and rear wheel drive so should be good fun on trackdays.

did also think of them, my thinking is that at that price the engine may not last as long as perhaps a golf / 205, or a bigger maxda etc.

did also see a mondeo st24 for under £1K

as you said the MR2 would be alot of fun though. What are you going to do it. What ever we get just going to stip it and put a couple of seats in and perhaps suspension?

Not sure what I'm going to do with the car yet, I'll probably not strip it as there isn't very much to strip from the interior! I'll probably just refresh the suspension, i.e put new bushes etc on. I've not driven it much yet, but so far it feels as though it'll be good on track. Not particularly fast though.

The engine in it is really good, mine has done 140k and feels better than the 205gti I used to have which had done 40k less - that used to burn a lot of oil. It sounds great as well, much more characterful than the engine in my GT4

yeah, I got an M3 and my mates got a lotus carlton, so whatever get will fell slow, also after coming back from Silverstone driving RS4's and 355's!

but defo a cheaper option then running the M3 on track.

will keep my eye out and go for something which will at least be plenty of fun!

thanks

I'd probably follow the masses and get a 205 GTi if you're not worried about RWD. If so, I'd say go for an MX5. Get one which you know could do with new dampers etc (at a representative price) and stick some adjustable coilovers on there and remove all extraneous weight! Beware, it takes a lot to make them feel quick in a straight line though.

If you fancy something a bit more powerful, how about an E30 325?

If you want to go Japanese, I can vouch for the 200 SX's fun factor, but would expect you'd be looking at something pretty rough for sub £2k.

Haven't driven the old ST24's but driven plenty of new Mondeo STs and they're great fun - very chuckable and forgiving. Not sure how muich of the original performance will be left on a £1k example though. As a wild card suggestion how about a rover 216 GTi? Don't laugh - the old square shape ones are really quite good and it should be mint for anything over about £500!!

cheers Chris, RWD would be nice but I am not that bothered. I did laugh a bit at the rover, BUT I saw a 220 coupe for about 650 also!!

As you said the old ST will probably will a bit rough, but for £1K what can you expect!!

Thanks all for the info!
