Personally I think thats a misnomer. Mine only tried to kill me once (hehe) and my fists are made of ham.
Is he thinking of a turbo or NA?
The revision 1's are the ones with the dodgy reputation for spinning out with no warning, so if he is worried about this, go for a revision 2 or above(1992 +). I think there was a minor change to the suspension for the revision 3 (1994+) as well, but anything above a revision 2 will be prone to under steer, where as a revision 1 is prone to over steer at the limit.
Repeating what people have said before tyres are very important. I currently have jap spec tyres on mine which will be changed as soon as I can, after advice from people on here(thanks for that guys after the good weather I agree with your opinions). The jap spec tyres are brilliant in weather like we currently have but anything other than that the car feels really unstable.
If you are thinking of getting a turbo take it easy in the wet for the first couple of months until you are used to the car, if you don't have good wet tyres on the car it can bite quite quickly.

I've often wondered whether the reputation these cars have on the limit is due its popularity with the boy racers who will spend a fortune on a new body kit but when it comes to new tyres go for the cheapest possible. I was talking to an accident recovery guy who was telling me about the number of scoobys he's pulled out of walls recently. All of them old turbos, most of them on bald or remoulded tyres. Good tyres and a bit of experience and an MR2 is a great handling car.

I have a '90 (G) Twin Turbo Import thats lives out in Spain that has around 290hp ish.. and it has caught me out a couple of times... a car that must be given respect!
Two Turbo's! Yowzers! How much did that conversion cost?
Or does he mean twin entry turbo? Lots of people make this mistake.
A pint for me if it's only one turbo

Yes, I was being sarcastic, hence the
If it's got the 14" wheels, bin them. Put on good tyres.
Drive it like you stole it, never let off hard, mid corner.
I spun my rev1 NA about once a month in 14 months of ownership (rubbish tyres on 14" rims).
I spun my Turbo once, 720 degrees, at 60mph, at Nurburgring, in 5 years of ownership.
I'd had 15", 16", 17" & 18" rims on the car during ownership, but all had good tyres (Goodyears, Toyos etc).

Decent tyres on it and don't take the p**s.
Mine has yet to try and kill me and I do like to drive it fast on twisty roads.

is your car knackered? My couple never tried to turn themselves around with no warning, it once did when I provoked it by forcing to tight a line going at stupid speeds out of old paddock...
