On behalf of a colleague - Where is the PAS pump on a J plate MR2 ?

My guess is that its driven fron an aux drive belt which will also drive the alernator and air con pump.

Yes, under the spare right back against the bulkhead. The ECU for the steering is on the RHS inner wing (as you are looking at the pump). You probably have to remove the plastic liner, but it's only held in with a handful of plastic rivets.

Not knowing what the problem is I thought I'd chip in on the off chance.

The relay for the PAS is known for sticking. Sometimes flicking the ignition rapidly on and off 10-20 times will release it.
