Subaru Legacy 2.5 Outback 1996

I am looking for a reliable, cheap to run car that can take a lot of beating, and stumbled across a Subaru Outback auto. I do not know anything about the model, so please fill me in with all cons and pros.
What should I look up for in a Outback? What is the servicing and fuel economy like? Any real problems with them?

They're usually pretty solid, autos tend to be thirsty though and soak up a fair bit of the torque. I've got a '97 Legacy 2.0 wagon (155bhp manual) and wouldn't touch an auto.
