I have a scooby, and although it likes petrol the running costs are not too bad. One of the reasons I choose a scooby was based on ok running costs and the bullet proof mechanics of a subaru.

SubAru

oil service every 7.5k miles 100+ GBP, unless you do it yourself of course.
Big service 500 GBP main dealer.

Oil change is critical - look at the sidc website.

If I were you I'd buy an unmodified 5-door with fsh; it probably hasn't been abused and opinion is that the handling on a 5-door is slightly better - less understeer.

How much money are you thinking of spending? New Imprezas only need servicing every 10k and its quite reasonable.
I wouldnt go with a 5 door myself unless i needed the space to carry a dog or something. The bodywork is different on the wagon and dont have the same street-cred. That said, i have seen some sorted wagons and if you need the space you cant go wrong.

You don't say what shape / age you are thinking of buying.

Generaly they are very reliable, but if they do go wrong, parts are expencive.

Depending on how you drive, they may have a thirst for tyres and brakes.
They are not that economical, even when driving gently.

As with any powerful 4wd car, if you do too many quick starts you will fry the clutch pretty quickly.

Dealers are ( in my experience ) good, with fixed price servicing priced as above.

I have had both a 4 door, and 5 door, and other than the shape they really are identical.

If you don't need the space get a 4dr, if you need something really practicle get a 5dr. 5dr scoobies have a stiffer bodyshell than the 4 door and handle better when properly sorted. Forget street cred...the in thing is Qcar status and they don't come much more Qcar than a 5dr Scoobie in Obsidian black.

OK....lets have the derogatory comments now from the 4dr owners hehe argue

hehe If I switch the Legacy for an Impreza at some stage it'll be a 4dr despite having always owned Subie wagons, for one specific reason: DCCD - afaik they've never made a 5dr with the DCCD drivetrain in it.

If they did though....

I reckon if you put a 6spd gearbox and diffs from an STi into a WRX sportwagon it might do the job. I don't know anyone that's done it but you never know.

As said, there are some really sorted wagons out there, one being yours by the looks, horses for courses isnt it. All i was saying is, if you dont need one or have a love for them there is no point.

Must be great showing up guys in supercars though, when they are having trouble shaking off the estate that appeared behind them!!

I seem to remember Vixpy1 saying something about putting a 6-speed with DCCD into his GTB so it can be done, not sure how much work/cost it would be but an option...

spinChecked his profile, it does have DCCD now and some other tasty bits too: www.pistonheads.com/members/showcar.asp?carId=7495

Simonwrx is right...Scoobs do have bullet proof mechs and the majority of scooby owners that will coroborate that statement. There aren't many cars out there you can tune to the eyeballs, extract silly amounts of power from, take to a track and rag the ar5e off it, then drive home and do some shopping the next day whilst letting your granny drive.

However if you rag any car all the time and thrash the b0ll0x off it everytime you get in it then it will eventually let go no matter what it is.

Jap cars in general though are excellent all rounders and i love my ultra-reliable ricerocket!! thumbup

Agree with ScoobieWRX on this one.
I have run WRX, STI and Type R Imprezas for a long time, (both standard and modified) and all have had a very hard life.
All fantastically reliable because they were looked after in a manner appropriate to a car that gets hammered.
We also look after lots of these cars and very rarely get reliability issues.
Simply service them properly using the right products and if you thrash it regularly do simple nut and bolt checks on major components.
If you do that they do not go wrong.
Unreliability comes from poorly thought out (or poorly installed) modifications or poor maintenance.
Nothing else!
Neil.

Again, as they said!
The reason some have reliability issues, but not many, is because they haven't been looked after properly.

Servicing is not a lot more than any other saloon car to be honest. The expense comes with insurance, road tax (now 300 quid if its a 2006 model onwards) and of course the petrol. Mine is pretty thirsty but even the standard WRXs won't see much more than mid 20s MPG, and that's if you drive it with slippers on (which you can't). As for reliability they are indeed bullet proof. The only weak point being clutches (AWD and a lot of power means they get a hammering), but even this isn't such an issue on the newer models. Personally I'd go for the 4 dr unless you really need the space in a 5 dr. If I'm being honest the 5drs don't have as much space in them as they appear to and compared to other estate cars they are quite small inside. However as scoobiewrx pointed out they are Qcars. I followed one into work last week and when he took off I only just managed to keep up! You could get a very tidy, very quick car with lots of potential for less than £10k. Not bad for a car that will show most 30-40k sports cars a clean pair of heels point-to-point.

Why are you selling Steve? You havent had it all that long!

My 2p from my Impreza owning days - mine had intergalactic mileage, but never let me down once. I found the dealers to be excellent too.

The only downside for me was the insurance was riduculously expensive - (I'm paying £600 less for the S2K, which is worth almost 3 times as much!)
