I've done a search, but not turned up anything.

Just had the service on the Scooby and they said that the exhaust was rusty, but not blowing. I don't want to replace it until I have to, but rather than panic about it when that time comes, can anybody advise on what systems are good.

At the moment the whole car is standard, so no ECU/induction, etc work has been done. It's likely to stay that way too, otherwise it will be much quicker than the Elise, rather than just a bit quicker

Would it be worth getting a whole system at once - the down pipe, sports cat, back pipe and exit pipe?
An ex-college runs Scooby World and I see they have a whole system for 450, bit that's de-cat and I want something that can get through the MOT without swapping bits over (I got tired of that with the FTO).

Also - is the cat in the Scooby integrated? The FTO had a seperate cat that was easy to take out and back in, but all of the parts I've seen seem a bit bigger than just a cat unit on it's own.

If you get a stainless steel exhaust it will never go rusty and will be much lighter than an OE system and more likely cheaper (depending where you purchase). If you get a decat uppipe you can get away with just 1 high flow 100/200 cell cat in the downpipe and the rest of the exhaust back is decat. Yes....the cat is integrated. In newage and onwards Imprezas that is all you need to get you through emissions.

I don't know the score for classic Imprezas but the same may apply.

Cheers.

I was thinking of getting a stainless system (I realise re-reading my original post this didn't look like the case) as I think, as you said, they last a lot longer.

I'll have to stick my head under the car tonight and see what the setup of mine actually is - the only helpful picture I can find is for a new model with a cat in the down pipe, the cat pipe and maybe something in the center pipe too?

So confusing! I knew all the bits of the FTO and how they fitted together, but I guess that's part of the fun of getting a new car

The standard (restrictive) system in the classic impreza is a very restrictive cat in the downpipe and a less restrictive cat in the centre section, and then a backbox. i.e. 3 parts.

If you don't want to swap parts over for an MOT, your best bet is a single unrestrictive sports cat in EITHER the downpipe OR the centre section, with the rest of the system straight-through. However, this is a fairly pricey option and may be too loud.

Depends what you want from the car. I have a full decat Hayward and Scott system which adds significant torque throughout the rev range, but it is VERY loud, and for an MOT I would need to replace either the downpipe (tricky but fine for emissions) or the centre section (easy but the standard centre section needs to be run VERY warm to get through an MOT).

Thanks Matt, that helps a lot. I may get a center + back without then. Maybe replace the downpipe later with a sports cat. So long as it gets through MOT, I'm happy. As I said, I used to work with the founder of Scooby World, and their complete and center-back systems aren't too expensive... hmmm. No, I can't afford it this month! But maybe have a REALLY good look for any pin-holes and see how fragile they may be next month

As for noise, coming from my last car (I seem to be mentioning that a lot at the moment) most cars are pretty quite... I'm a little sad when I hear other FTOs as they sound so weak.
But then I know how loud Scoobies can go, and now I quite like having a car that's not so noisy when cruising. But it is a bit weak when I hoof it - to the point where I need the speedo/GPS to realise how fast I'm going.

what year is your classic? if it's pre 94 then you don't need the cat ,like mine just gone through with full decat.

on my last impreza i had a full decat from Hayward and Scott and it was noisey, but a good noisey. The impreza i've just bought has a full decat from magnex and it's a lot quieter when cruising.

the sports cat is the way to go if you're worried, as you'll only loose around 2bhp over a decat. go for the one in the downpipe rather than the centre section. as already said, you'll need to drive it like you stole it before the mot so as it's nice and hot. The classic imprezas only have one cat and that's in the downpipe. the centre section "cat" is just a resonator box.

the scooby world ninja is a good exhaust package, had one of those before the h&s system.

i would consider however, getting a 3" system. it's worth the extra money if you do end up tuning the impreza later on.

have a look on bbs.scoobynet.com in the group buy section and classified. always some bargains to be had. flea bay is a good place to look as well for exhausts. keep an eye out for a prodrive downpipe as this will already have the sports cat in it.

It's a 99(T), so I think I'll need a cat

It was a bit wet and I was a bit rushed last night so I didn't get under the car. I'll try tonight.

that'd be a yes then you'll get more power gains by removing the cat rather than the resonator box. but really being a 99 you should get it remapped after doing this to get the most out of it and to be on the safe side.

Milltek do a full system with highflow sports cats for the classic.

I know Powerstation sell them but I assume lots of other place do too.
