Hi, hope this isn't a stupid question. My mate asked me if his Nissan Fairlady could be run on 95RON petrol with no mods i.e. would the ECU automatically detect the lower rated fuel. Previous owner said it must be run on super.

I wasn't sure so I thought I'd better ask the experts!

I have also emailed him to ask why he needs to run it on a lower rating - maybe he is a cheapskate.

Most people who tend to run it on 95RON do so because they don't want the hassle of finding V-power or the like everytime they fill up, and don't like the added expense.
In answer to your question, it'll run fine, but it will run a big risk of detting, which kills engines. Particularly in the summer when temps are warmer.
Best solution is to either buy an off the shelf remapped ECU or have it remapped at a tuner for the fuel he wishes to run on.
I'm not sure whether the standard ECU can be remapped on 300's, but there'll be loads of options available.

i thought knock sensors were designed to stop all that so it should be fine. and i'm guessing being a 90's car it does have a knock sensor?

Of course they have knock sensors, but they're only so effective. They don't stop det.
Plus relying on a knock sensor to make up for what is upto a 8 point jump in RON isn't really an option when the most the ECU will do to compensate is fiddle with the timing.
A proper remap will ensure that knock isn't a problem, it doesn't det, and you get the most from the fuel.

i see, well when i had the MR2T i never put 95 in it ever, but that did hurt the wallet hehe
i'd find an ECU that let you use 2 maps and just switch between them when you got different fuel in the tank. doesn't the apexi let you do that? i dunno

what i do know is the 300ZX looks the nuts! biggrin

The car is in Japan so he must be talking about switching from 100RON to whatever the regular Jap stuff is rated at.
