hi all
started my car (02 sti ppp )this afternoon after standing for the week, started as normal but was not ideling as normal, fluctuating between 500/1200rpm.on pulling away from a roundabout quiet hard i notice it was poping and back fireing, but once out on the motorway all seemed ok ,but the malfunction light remains on all the time. anybody had this kind of problem or any clues as to what it could be .also is the car ok to drive in this state idea

Sounds like it could be MAF on the way out, sometimes they do that.

(Should still be driveable but worth doing ASAP or the MAF may let go completely and leave you stranded somewhere.)

Agreed. Sounds like a dying MAF.
Have you changed your air filter, could just be contaminated and need a clean.

Dont think the MAf could be a problem on a 02 STI. I think this could be linked to a lambda sensor fault!

do you know anyone with a fault code reader near you? I have one but i am based in woking so not really close enough to you!

In the event of MAF sensor failure/disconnection the car will revert to using the MAP sensor so will still be driveable

If you are in the Surrey area we can use our Delta dash software to check the fault codes to help determine the fault.
