When my little rocket sells tomorrow hopefully i have my eye on a GT4 ST205. What are they like to live with? Being Jap i should hope they are reliable, not looking as a daily driver but as a second car for weekend blasts and occasional track use.

hi mate

ran a gt4 everyday for 4 months (100 miles a day!) and only got rid cos wanted something newer.

Totally easy to live with, would be even better as a weekend car as would keep the running costs down. Only advice id give is to make sure you look around and get a good one. Make sure the fig 8's have been done and that the engine is running sweet and you should be fine.

Power is pretty good, but the car is heavy and feels it but has bags of traction and is very quick cross country. You can easily get 300bhp by fitting a downpipe, exhaust, some colder plugs and upping the boost to 1.1/1.2 bar and the engine will still be within its limits.

Fuel consumption when you boot it is pretty comical, but equally, on a cruise it will do over 30mpg. All in all, as a weekend car it would be a great buy- get over to the owners club and see if there are any for sale- when you get one, give me a pm and you can buy my luvverly anthracite wheels off me- took them off mine before I sold it and not got round to putting them on e-bay yet!

happy hunting!

Ours is a 2nd car - weekend blatting etc - wonderfully reliable and a joy to drive. Yes, I think these cars are great and I can't see it being replaced for a looooooooooooong time. (he keeps muttering about a Porsche but doesn't want to sell the 4!!)

www.gt4oc.net for all the advice you will ever need.
Make sure you buy a car with the fig 8's done and the clutch too (as this is pricey!) Best bet is to buy a car from an owner on the oc, stay away from ebay ones! Alternatively, import one yourself from an auction but be prepared to spend money on it getting the fig 8's, lower arms etc replaced.
Don't bother with the celica-club.co.uk as its full of gen 6 VVTs or max powered NA GT celicas. Get over to www.gt4oc.netbiggrin

Thanks guys, unfortunatly my little car failed to sell so it will end up going for less than i ideally wanted for it.

If i still end up getting one it may end having to be an ST185.

And mine, which is a fairly decent example of the marque.

What is a Gen 6 VVT by the way?

I sold my ST205 back in April. I found it to be a good reliable car. Nice handling if you stiffen up the stock suspension a little.
Fig 8 joints are prone to go on them, big cost to get put right as when they go you usually find they have caused secondary damage to other suspension arms which all need replacing.
That said, the above is mainly the only thing that is an issue with these cars.
Obviously only try to look at the stock or midly tuned ones as heavily tuned engines is like walking into a mine field if you are not an experienced tuner yourself.

I used mine as an everyday car. Good fun on the 'b' roads smile
