Looking for a Mazda RX8
Discussion
A mate at work is looking at the RX8 one like this.
RX8 on autotrader
Is this anything he should look out for?
Any milage related problems with the engine? I've heard rumours that the engine requires a rebuild at 60k miles.
Also do you really need the 231 BHP or is the 190 enough?
What sort of mileage will he get out of a tank, and is it true that all the engines like to consume the engine oil.

Check for the paint work rubbing where the rear door closes, if he can pop off the wheel arch liners, check the oil cooler pipes for corrosion. Point him at the owners club as there's a wealth of info on there, including a buyers guide IIRC.
Rebuilds at 60k is a general guide for the RX7. There are a few RX8s still going strong at 150k plus in the US without having been opened up. New materials for the rotor tips and oil injection in the Renesis are supposed to help reduce tip wear which was the bugbear of the 13B.
Personally, I'd say go for the 231. Not only more power, but 6 speed and xenons. People point out that the 192 has a little more torque, but the whole point about the rotary engine is to use the revs to get the power at the top end - if you don't want to do that, I'd suggest you're looking at the wrong car.
Mileage from a tank - there's a thread on the owners club forum where people hitting 300 miles from a (60l) tank have posted. Personally I get around 200 normally, 230 ish on a motorway run. I'm of two minds here - I do tend to drive it like I stole it with the majority of my miles done on country roads, but I also wonder why someone would buy an RX8 if they drive in such a way as to regularly get 300 miles to a tank...
They do use oil, but it's not a bad thing per se - they're designed to. There are oil injectors that inject oil (the mapping is in picolitres apparently, so we're not talking huge amounts) into the chamber to lubricate the rotor tips. I forget how much mine uses - around a litre every 1500 miles or so from memory. Much more around the track. At the ring I tend to go through a tank of fuel and a litre of oil in about 10 laps (incidentally, if on track or pushing *really* hard on road, fill up before you're down to a quarter tank or you scare the
out of yourself when it starts hesitating because of fuel surge
). Opie Oils do a *really* good deal on Fuchs semi-synth (Mazda prohibit you from using fully synth) for OC members.
I love mine, although the rear springs are too soft and the rear damping is a little odd (I'm not a good enough driver to identify this, but mine's been datalogged around the Millbrook outer handling circuit by a ride and handling engineer). Watch this space for news on a new set of springs and dampers if that's of interest.

Agree with all of the above. I drove a friends 190 and liked it alot. When I tested the 230 that I brought the difference was noticable straight away. Its sounds slightly better too.
I get 200 miles from a tank too although I did get 260 yesterday going to Crewe (steady 90mph)
Excellent cars, could be built better inside but thats my only gripe. The kids love it oo.
