Ive done a few insurance quotes for an r33 gtr, and the majority of companies want the car to be fitted with a tracker. What is the sort of price this is likely to cost me?

Somewhere between £300 - £400 for the tracker inc fitting, then you pay £100 a year for subscription to the tracker company. I pay that for Tracker Monitor. It's basic but it does the job and means not only does my car not get refused insurance but it only cost £365 for myself and partner to be insured on my Scooby.

Get in touch with your insurance company and find out what models they're happy with. I know that there are a few companies that don't like the monitor system and insist on something a bit more advanced. My old WRX had a Horizon system fitted when I got it which brought the insurance down from 800 quid a year to a few quid over 400. The system on my current impreza is meta-sat system (fitted as standard) which is pretty good. It has a GPS security system and sim card in it. There's no subscription and your car will text you if the alarm goes off. It can also be remotely immobilised via text message and you can set it to alert you if the car exceeds a pre-set speed (handy when it's being serviced). I don't know how much the meta-sat system costs though.

p.s. You can also text you car and it will give you it's status which includes position, speed, alarm status and engine temperature.

It works very well but I don't think it's that cheap. New STi's have the system as standard. Have a look around the Meta-sat website http://www.metasystem.co.uk/ and give them a call.

One thing I'd reiterate is contact your insurance company before you get anything fitted. Some companies don't like certain systems. I know that direct line were willing to knock 400quid off my premium but wouldn't if I had a monitor system. Luckily when I picked the car up it had a Horizon system fitted by the previous owner and as soon as I'd faxed Direct-line the installation certificate they were happy to give me cheap insurance.
