Five to Six Grand to spend in the New Year which should I buy?
Nissan 300ZX or Toyota Celica GT4?
I'm sure they both have their pros and cons but I would be interested in a few opinions.

Thanks

I would avoid the nissan, most i have seen seem a bit leggy.

if you want the comfot of the Z, consider a Mitsubishi GTO.

if you want handling/sportiness, as was said, an MR2 Turbo is a good bet. No back seats like the GT4 though.

edit: one other to consider, an importer in Bucks has a very nice looking Soarer Twinturbo manual, with a few mods probably running over 300bhp. Looks fun!

Only if you want an underperforming car that will break down often and expensivly.

I've never driven a UK one, in fact the only one i drove was a "lightweight" MR version, but it was much, much better than i thought it would be. Leagues ahead of the barge people say it is.

I have owned my GTO twin turbo for nearly 5 years and in that time its never let me down, reliability is not an issue if they are properly maintained and not unduly abused, but as with most cars if you don't look after them they will bite you hard!!

There are a lot of myths concerning their weight/handling etc....yeah sure they are a heavy car but rest assured they can mix it with some of the very best on a track.

The word 'Underperforming' normally comes from people who have never driven a GTO or are just repeating the misleading information they have read on their specific car forums.... mine when it was almost standard put in a 13.7s @ 102 1/4 mile....not exactly underperforming for a car that weighs 1730kgs

My advice would be to testdrive one and make your own mind up, you might be pleasantly surprised

both 300zx and GT4 expectations ruined.. expected so much more from them. MR2 Turbo very very nice, as long as you are familiar with RWD mid engine imho.. otherwise you will go backwards through a hedge, at best.

not had close contact or taken a GTO apart so cannot comment..

Scoob heavy? 1230kgs for a classic.. not really.. iirc the MR2 is around the 1500kg mark (cannot remember exact) and GT4 heavier.

just googled.. Mk 2 MR2 is 1210kg mk 3 1225kg so I remember wrong..

Scoob classic is 1230kg kerb and 1450kg kerb.. taken from
http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm

on a quick search GTO 1400 kg–1710 kg taken from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_GTO
or 1900kg here
http://www.j-garage.com/mitsubishi/gto/z16a.htm
taking the higher weights as gross that's 260kg to 450kgs heavier for the GTO to the scoob.. that's a considerable number of women in the back of the scoob or one depending on your preference winkbiggrin

Weights from www.english.auto.vl.ru:

GTO varies from 1600kg (NA manual) to 1710 for a TT.
Imprezas from 1180 for a classic RA, up to 1485 for newage STI.
300ZX from 1440 (NA 2-seater) to 1580 for a TT 2+2 T-bar
GT4 from 1380 to 1460

I haven't driven any of the above except for various Subarus, but have heard the the 300ZX feels surprisingly nimble/agile for a relatively heavy car, and that GTOs can be remarkably boring for something that quick as they feel like the car is doing everything for you (heard from people who've driven them as well as the general internet-propagated stereotypes). GT4's have a reputation for being a bit dull and understeery as standard but not too hard to sort the suspension out and improve things significantly.

Thanks for the response.
Have got plenty of motorway and B Roads to use whatever I buy.
Going to be used pretty much as a daily driver so reliabilty will be the main consideration.

Stay away from RX7's then wink, both 300ZX and GT4 should be pretty reliable as long as maintained properly, however any work which does need doing on a 300ZX TT will probably get expensive as everything is packed so tightly into the engine bay that it makes it quite tricky to work on, and even some relatively minor jobs become engine-out material.
