There's a battle being fought over on MR2OC over which can corner faster - the N/a or Turbo MR2.

A lot of the n/a guys insist they're faster on a corner because they don't need to worry about a surge of boost throwing them into a hedge. I (and virtually all the turbo owners) think differently. We have limited slip diffs to deal with that sort of thing.

The over-riding point is to decide which could get down a twisty country lane faster.

Anyone on here care to throw in their 2p?

The really scary thing is some turbo owners seem to think the pedal only has two positions!

They are essentially the same car, so given reletively similar suspension setups they should corner pretty similarly. The only benefit to the turbo is when you can actually plant your foot. Having a turbo will not give you more grip. I know, I've had both NA and Turbo.

I've been wondering about that though. Most turbos have the limited slipp diff. Will that affect the grip at all? (genuine question, I don't have a clue).

I would have thought it'd let you apply the power coming off the apex sooner - so helpful on the b-road - but not actually increase apex speed at all unless you were on the power all the way round.

I'm interested as to why the N/A owners think the throttle pedal on a Turbo is binary- imo that is more telling than anything else.
Indeed. I can get that bit more power for better turn-in and also when I'm ready to exit I can feed a bit more power above everything that the N/A engine would have been able to muster up.

The LSD will help to a point, but at the point of slippage the lsd will 'spin' giving ou a tail slide, where as the open will just spin 1 wheel, and keep track at the back, to a point. It's all nanoseconds, and bullcrap to be honest. On the limit is on the limit in both cars, for a given weight, and setup. Remember the NA isn't that much of a slouch, and at cornering speed, the differential between the cars isn't that different to to the point where you put power down.

Owned both.

Turbo, the LSD allows you to put the power down out of bends sooner and it also aids braking approaching corners (keeps you straight).

N/A will be faster round bends with a crap driver as they don't have to worry about the torque throwing them off the road wink , foot down and not enough power to be an issue in the dry.

OK, i may get flamed by both parties for saying this, but the NA MR2 Roadster would be the quickest through a twistie country lane than either mark 2 car. Just not sure if the roadster is in the equation??

It will outhandle the MKII cars, that is for sure, however, remember the MkII is a lot faster in a straight line, and not 'that' behind in the corners, so it would be a close thing. Also remember the ethos behind both cars is different.

Very true, its all a matter of what type of road it is really and i dont think they were talking about the mark 3 anyway. I just like to talk it up every chance i get since i love them so muchbiggrin

It depends how handling is defined, are we talking general ability or feedback? Some people confuse grip with handling- a Viper has immense grip but from what I've been told aren't communicative or friendly on the limit- the exact opposite of an MX5.

Handling & pace do not necessarily go hand in hand.
I see what your saying, but the Roadster can be pushed hard into a corner and is very controlable when it does start to let go, it doesnt snap away like a viper apparantly does, although if your not ready for it, it will bite you for taking your eye off the ball, much like any RWD car i suppose!?!

I know its not a comparison to the Mark 2, and i dont want to sound like im defending the car because it has its downsides, but its Tiff Nedells choice out of the modern roadsters in terms of handling and all round ability, and the man does seem to know his stuff.

It would be an interesting scrap scratchchin someone would need to transport their car to the other side of the world though..I'm in Aus.

I havent driven an SW20 N/A or tubby but I am on my 2nd AW11 Supercharged.

The one I have now has a few tweaks to it:

Koni adjustables
Eibach springs
Whiteline adjustable anti-roll bars
Full bush kit
Slotted brake discs
Braided brake lines
Cusco 'Powerball' exhaust system in to a 2.5" system
'SC14' Supercharger conversion
TRD Valve springs
Wade 267 exhaust cam
Adjustable cam gears
Water-Air intercooler (Even on a 38deg day day the intercooler stays cold to the touch)
Electric Water Pump
Rebuilt 'box with SW20 synchro's
KAAZ LSD (Bitey biggrin )
Exedy heavy duty clutch
EMS aftermarket ECU

Oh and the final and most important modification: A blown headgasket rolleyes thats going to be a pain in the arse to do!

Its not been on the dyno yet but a friend has got similar mods and puts down 180BHP at the wheels. I think mine needs a decent tune and the cam gears tweaking as the previous owner did it all himself. Torque is definately increased over a stock one though.

I guess comparing modified cars is pretty pointless but I think cornering speeds and braking distances would compare if not exceed those of an SW20. I would think mine would outrun an SW20 N/A? Not sure about a tubby though..

Everyone seems to be selling these, all the new owners keep talking of needing remaps or bits and pieces needing doing. I'll have a link please but I may enquire with a very open mind.
Its the guy who does most of the mapping on the Supra forum thats selling, he's too busy mapping other peoples cars to drive his own so letting it go.
