Scooby WRX question - Exhaust
Discussion
Hi,
I've got a '52 plate WRX sportswagon.
This week a chuffing noise has started from what appears to be behind the turbo manifold. My local exhaust 'specialist' aren't interested in fixing it, and advised me to remove the heat shield to take a closer look.
I started to do this tonight, but after breaking off 3 bolt head gave up.
Have anybody had the same problem? Was did you find it to be a cracked turbo or exhaust manifold?
Thanks for any help...

You have the same model i have and the same problem i had.
The standard WRX Uppipe/Cat Converter has a flexible joint that that in time will leak (probably when the car is 5yrs old, like ours and clearly right on time!!) and makes your chuffing sound which means it's blowing. You may or may not yet start to smell unburnt petrol in the car when the engine is idling and the car is stationary, if not now you will do in time. This is also hampering the spool up of your turbo as exhaust gasses are escaping before they have a chance to enter the Turbo, which means you are losing performance and the car will seem to run a bit off colour.
Get yourself a decat wrapped uppipe + bolts/studs kit fitted. You can attempt to do it yourself but i wouldn't bother as it's a pain in the arse job to do if you cannot get the car up in the air and have the right tools.
The exhaust manifolds have to be removed, downpipe or easier still whole exhaust in one piece is removed and then you can remove the uppipe. Then you need to renew all the gaskets and put new studs/bolts into the top of the downpipe where it bolts onto the turbo and new studs where the uppipe bolts onto the exhaust manifold and turbo.
To be honest it's a bit involved and only becomes easier to do when you have removed and replaced the standard exhaust system with a performance system. That way you can get to all the bolts on the uppipe without having to remove the Downpipe as well but you still have to remove the exhaust manifold. The bolts on the downpipe really are a pain to undo as they are practically welded onto the downpipe/turbo from all the heat generated, and may well snap off in the process of removal.
I had mine done by Zen Performance in Wellingborough, Northants. They do an excellent job, really know their stuff and are very reasonably priced too!! Give them a tinkle 01933 675432, if anything just to get a price. Job takes about half a day or so.
I don't know what scooby specialists there are down your neck of the woods, but i would certainly let someone else do it that knows what to do and have probably done more uppipes and exhausts than we've had hot dinners!!
