Workmate of mine is looking to buy a GT$4 - any known issues apart from the usual stuff?

MrE, Mr Tastic?

Just the usual stuff from the buying guides i.e have fig 8's been changed, has it had regular oil changes - just making sure it's been looked after basically.

I notice your in Solihull, if your mate is local I'm only in Leamington if they wanted to have a look around mine if it's of any use?

To be honest that's what I ended up doing!

I spent ages looking through adverts and reading up on them, I didn't buy the cheapest one but the previous owner had spent a fortune on it doing the suspension etc. I've not had a single thing go wrong with it in the two years I've had it.

'lo Flibbles.

Usual stuff with any used car - condition is everything.

Specific to the Four;
Superstrut suspension *will* fail every 60K, and it's not cheap to rebuild.
Clutches are strong but do wear out eventually - an utter pain to change.
Rear diff mounts fail (full bore in 3rd/4th, lift hard and listen for a *thump* from the back). Cheap and easy to fix, so use it as a haggle factor.
Gearbox is from a truck - this is normal.

I'd avoid badly modified examples - they're cheap now and some have fallen into the hands of the "just turn the boost up" merchants with no supporting work. Engines are tough as boots, but run lean at over a bar of boost and anything will detonate eventually.

I now refer you to my favourite snippet regarding the ST205. A wise man (me) once said something along the lines of;
"If you can't afford to buy a good one, you can't afford to own a bad one. It was a 30K+ car 12 years ago. You will get bills to match".

That being said, I bought mine for a decent price, spent a not inconsiderable sum sorting the thing out and it's not put a foot wrong since. There is still nothing else I would rather own for the money I have. Because it's *mine*.

Thanks James, he's torn between a GT4 (the ropey end of the price range) and an FTO. To be honest, I'm trying to steer him towards _Battys_FTO as I think that would be a beter buy for him.

He's coming from a 1.1 Rover 200, so even an FTSlow is going to feel like a rocket ship!

If a four even smells slightly ropey, run away. Don't walk, run.

Cheers mate - however I suspect they're burying me in this one.....
.....although I do have a Porsche fund (that may turn into "mental Catafield" fund at some point)

Yah. It'll currently stretch to a very used 944 - which is not really what I'm after.

I did think about a 944 Turbo but the rear seats are worse than mine, so 996 it will have to be...
'tis about my thinking. Blue/Grey 996 C4S will do nicely. But then that's mega super 7 or Atom money....

Yah but Gaz, by the time James gets his he'll be too old to appreciate it.

It's frustrating, I'd love a Catafield but it's not cost effective to sell the 4 :S And the Alfa isn't worth it.
