Impreza - strange pulley noises?
Discussion
Just bought an Impreza 2000 Turbo, 1998 S Reg. and, rather than enjoying the sound of the engine exhaust note from the rear, there are some peculiar noises rom the front! Best described as a combination of squeaky springs and/or more usually "bird song" as my wife describes it. The noise can be induced by turning to the right at slower speeds, 10-40mph. I am wondering if one of the belt driven pulleys are to blame - alternator, etc? as the belt may be slightly differently loaded when turning direction?
Any suggestions very welcome - the car is under warranty and I would like to forward some ideas to the selling dealer.
PS. Should the near side rear fog light be blanked off and have no bulb holder behind the lens?

Agreed with both comments....
I had a PS fluid leak on my WRX via a pipe that goes into the stering rack. After a time it screwed the PS pump and buggered the belt so i had to change both.
Make sure the PS belt is well adjusted and check for wear, obviously make sure you have the correct PS fluid level and if it still squeaks after that, change the PS belt and PS fluid. If it still squeaks after that the PS pump is knackered!!
PS pump is an easy job to do youself even if you are only mildly competent

Thanks for that - it does look like the power steering pump is responsible for some of the noise.
However, there is a real bad creaking from the front nearside wheel, especially at low speeds, still noticeable at higher speeds, and only diminishing slightly in a straight line, finally disappearing on right turns. It's as if the car had something caught behind the caliper, scraping on the driveshaft or wheel rim...but nothing there. It is noticeable to pedestrians and appears to be getting worse. There is no play in the wheel to suggest bearing failure..could the joint or shaft be to blame? Thanks.

Behind the rotor is a fixed plate. It's likely the plate has somehow been pushed onto the back of the rotor going over a big something in the road, or whatever. Check that to make sure it's free from the back of the rotor, you should see about 1/2 inch free space between that and the rotor. You would know if the wheel bearings were on their way as they tend to make a droning noise all the time and get louder at speed and the worse they get.
HTH
And when check the PAS fluid level, make sure it is right on Max. I had a PAS noise with the fluid about half way up the dipstick, that went away when the level was full.
Re the fog light, it has been like that on both my turbo 2000s, so I would guess the answer is that it left the facory like that.
Do all the suspension bushes look sound?
