I presently own a 987 Porsche Boxster S and before that i had a fully loaded E46 BMW M3 SMG but have the urge to get something alittle more hardcore. The M3 was awesome and as i was only 23 at the time and had gone from a vauxhall corsa it seemed VERY quick. I have now had my Boxster for just over a year and although i think the car is great looking and is a great drive with the roof down on a twisting B road it slightly lacks in the power department. 0-60 is 5.5 secs, by no means slow but when i read the figures of the FQ 360 (4.1) and the fact its pretty much a rally car (so great handling) its got me thinking. I plan to get the summer months out of the boxster but come the end of August may part exchange for an Evo. I just have a few questions. Service intervals, is it 4,500 miles? also whats involved in the service? and how expensive is it? also when is the car due a major service or is it pretty much a major service everytime it goes in on the 4,500 intervals? Also whats the car like to live with, i used the M3 and the boxster as everyday cars and they were fine, how would the Evo compare? Im looking to spend around 24k on one but is the insurance likely to me much more than that of an m3 or a Boxster S? Also any other advice on these cars would be greatly appriciated.
Cheers.

Alec

Yeah service intervals are every 4500 miles, ours has had 2 so far and iirc the last one was about £170. Basically an oil change, change wheels around and change filters.

They're thirsty beasts though so be prepared to spend on fuel, especially considering prive rises.

No idea about insurance for you, too many variables to consider.
No idea how it compares to the other cars you mentioned either.

All I can say is that Evo's are group 20 insurance. But depending on age and experience it's not too expensive.

I've had quotes for a 355 and Gallardo for less than an Impreza STI which was the same as an evo. Probably because you tend to see less Fezza's knocking over off licences at 2 in the morning! Interestingly an old RS4 biturbo was significantly less to insure than the Jap rally beasts.

Sad but true. I put a lot of it down to the fact the crims like them so much as joyrides / getaway cars / stolen to order.

Incidentally my Skyline which had all mods declared (of which there were quite a few), agreed value yadda yadda yadda cost a hell of a lot less than a standard Evo FQ 330 to insure.

well someone covered the servicing thing. my evo 6 only does 19mpg (roughly) so bear that in mind when it comes to everyday running with todays fuel prices.
insurance is really high on them for some reason. the newer ones are cheaper to insure than older ones but i think its going to be one of those things that you really need to shop around for.
if you ask on the mlr website loads of people will help you find out info. do a quick search on there forums first as pretty much everything you need can be found there.

Well i only get around 18 to 19 mpg out of the Porsche and the M3 was around 20mpg, i guess you could say im a spirited driver. Fuel cost's won't be an issue. I must admit tho i was abit shocked to see an evo cost's more to insure than a Ferrari! i payed around £2,000 for the m3 when 23 because i live near central London and then payed around £1,800 for the Porsche so going by what i've been told insurance is probably going to be silly and around the 3 to 4 grand mark, forget that! I will call up A plan and just get a quote, be interesting to see what they say. Still tho i love the idea of getting an FQ 360. Not really a big fan of the exterior, not the best looking car in the world, i think the subaru impreza rb320 looks abit more nicer but i suppose you could always tinker with the cosmetics of the car......hmmmm time will tell. As for now im happy to enjoy the summer months with the roof down in the Porsche.

Would like to see what quotes you are getting on the FQ.

I am 28 currently own a Scooby (modded and declared) and only pay £380 Per year.

I had a quote for the FQ300 Variant and that was £700 Per year with come minor mods (exhaust, Remap, filter)

If you are aspirited driver expect a lot less than 19mpg, my other half can just about scrape that with the bairn in the car, realistically you will be under 15. Great fun cars though with a massive support via the MLR. I am on my 2nd one and have been an owner for almost 5 years and love it every time out the smiles per miles way outweigh the running costs.

£380 A YEAR?????? where did you get that from? I'm 38 with a clean licence, and an sti with no mods and pay £540!!

By the way...the fq360 will blow away most of the cars mentioned as alternatives imho.

Very nice car the IX Evo 360, however very very rare at only 200 units available in the UK. May be hard finding one to buy.

You're living in London so i would have said that with the state of London roads, huge potholes, badly maintained, badly rutted roads and all that the M3 and Porsche were much better suited than an EVO.

I found EVO suspension just too hard to live with everyday so i got the Scooby instead as the softer on my bum and back option but no doubt the 360 will be a real precision surgeons tool when it comes to blasting away the opposition. Owners of more exotic machinery around town would be well embarrased by an EVO 360 at the traffic light grand prix and i have no doubts it will be an absolutely awesome hardcore drive on full chat.

However, for everyday use around London and for motorway work i would go for the new V8 M3 with all the toys, lovely noise and very similar go!! I hear they handle pretty damn good too. I'm also sure the V8 M3 would be a lot of fun around a circuit and if you want hardcore get the CSL.

If you lived out in the sticks though with plenty of decent b-roads i would have the EVO no question as a much better choice, period!!
