Toyota Starlet/Glanza Turbo
Discussion
Hiya all
Anyone ever owned or at least driven one of these? Was it standard or tuned?
These are supposed to be great little cars and with a bit of fettling of its 1300cc engine can get a healthy 300+BHP
I'm a Nissan man , dont know much about these but gauging interest in having one as a track day tarmac terrorist

Sorry I fell for one and it was absolutely crap. Servicing is more intense that an Mitsi Evo and they need loads spending on them to make them handle or to get any more power out of them.

Are you having a laugh?!
My EP82 was as reliable as any other toyota i've ever owned and needed servicing once every 6000 miles or so, it's very cheap to insure and tax as well!
As far as modifying and handling, i fitted TEIN coilovers, Cusco Pillow Ball Mounts and TRD LSD and on smooth tarmac the thing was phenomenal one thing i regret not doing before selling it was visiting Donnington.
I can't speak for the glanza as i owned the older variant but they are from s
te!
With regards horse power, i think you'll struggle to get 300 on standard internals but a health 200 at the wheels is easy attainable and in a car that weighs a little over 700 kg's will see you in the low 13's at 1/4 mile.
It's a car i wouldn't think twice about getting again should the need arise to downgrade!

I've bought & sold many of them, brilliant little cars, bombproof in stock trim, they only need some basic mods like coilovers, intercooler & some boost to make them fantastic. Will put any of the old Gti's to shame. Not one has ever come back to me for a warranty issue either

I have an aprox 200bhp example, ive had plenty of problems with it but it is a cracking little car. standard cars are v reliable but over 160bhp and reliability is an issue. if you are handy with spanners you will be fine
cheap insurance and plenty of online help available.
over 300 bhp is possible but costs thousands with forged internals and big turbo required.

Ive got an EP82, on a 1992 plate. Ive owned it for about 18 months now and other than brake pads, oil changes and general servicing ive not had any problems with it! It starts first time every time, its a subtly modd'ed engine (about 160bhp ish) and its still quicker than any Boxster/M3/Scooby out there upto 80 odd mph, and im sure other starlet/glanza drivers will agree!
personally i cant fault mine.... but one person's opinion is different to anothers.
cracking little cars, cheap to run, cheap to insure, and lots of fun!

I've taken part in a few highly enjoyable hoons along with Ash.

Just to put this in context, I drive a Lotus Elise Sport 160. Around 720kg, approx 165bhp.
Straight line performance? Once rolling, the Starlet accelerates as quick as my Elise.
Handling? If driven hard, I was able to very gradually open a small gap on twisty sections of road. These were roads I know extremely well in one of the most focussed of all S1 Elises, fitted with Lotus Sport suspension. And i'm certainly no featherfoot.

Something of a giant killer, those little Starlet Turbos. Its pace certainly surprised me.

they are crackin little motors, there is an absolute fortune of them over here in Ireland, if ur thinkin of gettin one id seriously consider coming over to have a look as they are a lot cheaper over here simply because there are so many of them around, as mentioned already 300bhp is optimistic a lot of money would be needed, 165-200bhp is generally what people over here are running and in a car that weighs just over 800kg its a lot of fun, relatively minor mods need for about 200bhp, ie.
FMIC, Fuel Cut Defender, full exhaust system with de-cat, decent induction kit, Boost Controller and at a stretch a larger turbo.
jus a few other things about them if ur interested, 2 stage turbo 115bhp for economy and 130bhp conrolled by switch on dash, top mount intercooler as standard and suffer from heat soak, 16" wheels would be about the biggest you'd want to put on it, to be honest they seem a lot sharper on 15's. good solid car sure what else would you expect its a toyota after all!!!
plenty parts available for them over here as well, factory and aftermarket. just google autotrader ireland and have a look at the price of them compared to the price in england, you'll be plesently suprised!
hope this helps.

Having been the one standing next to Ash while fitting new engines, turbos etc i would say yes they are real fun to drive although the handling can be testing at times and any more power than what Ash has really wouldnt be useable anywhere but a drag strip and would probably make it slower on a 'spirited' drive due to having to let off to kerb wheelspin. I own a Focus Rs which was standard when Ash got his Starlet with minor mods and up to 100mph ish(on a private test track of course) he was quicker than me (also watched him push a Subaru wrx up the rd from the passenger seat of an M5!)

. On the plus side working on them is very easy for anyone with basic mechanical skills, but if your not that way inclined i would steer clear as you will end up spending a lot of money on labour as these cars need to be fettled on a regular basis. One of the older Starlet's was on the track with me on the Friday at Japfest. That thing was insane! I think the guy said it was putting out about 235 at the wheels or something. The guy who owned it bought it off someone as a non-runner, turned out to be the immobiliser. It had all sorts on it, forged internals, big brakes, FMIC, coilovers, turbo etc. Think the guy said previous owner spent £7k on it. It was easily the fastest on the track in our session, beating all the evo's, gt4's, scoobies etc..
Would make an awesome track car indeed!

Was that the black one in the public session?
That was a f**king quick Starlet!
Great feedback so far guys , been looking into power possibilities , 300BHP was a bit optimistic for what the car is and i can see reliability issues coming up.
I was thinking of coming over to Ireland and looking at the floods of AE86's over there aswell
