I'm looking at buying an R33 GTR (midnight purple if poss). Budget isnt really a problem on the purchase, but it's the running costs i'm looking into. I realise this is a serious motor, i have been researching for a long time, but it is really hard to gain a good grasp on how viable a Skyline is as a day-to-day prospect.

Apologies for the mundane nature of the thread but any info is useful, and hopefully then i can come and show you the fruits of your labours at various meets etc.

Mate of mine owns one , all i can say is the the RB26DETT engine in it can be a thirsty one and its standard , commutes 22 miles to work each day and gets through about £120 petrol a week with current prices

With just exhaust and induction mods, they are extremely reliable and a well maintained car could easily be used as daily transport. They are actually very civilised. Mid 20s to the gallon is very possible as long as you are not on boost all of the time which is very tempting smile

had my skyline 2 years now and use it nearly every day.its an r32gtr but basically the same as r33.

i put new brake pads on it and changed the fluids twice a year (about £60 a time) other than regular servicing which is cheap if you can do it yourself, thats it.i drive across town, sit in traffic, fly down A roads along motorways and it runs perfectly.(tempting fate now!) i've done 11,000 in it so far.

its thirsty though. you're looking at teens per gallon but i have seen 28mpg before.

mine has filter and nismo/hks exhaust, iridium plugs (60,000 miles between changes) and makes 343.5hp and 322lb/ft and its done 66,000 miles.

my other car is a 1996 fiesta 1.1 which i bought at the same time to keep miles down on skyline and although it can be a pain in the ass running 2 cars it's cheaper, especially at the moment with petrol at a million quid a gallon!
hope that helps..

I had a purple R33 GTR. Cams, turbos, fueling, power fc, intercooler, exhaust etc etc. Approx 600bhp. Was my only car at the time and fairly quick.

The only real issues with GTR's (esp high power) seem to be spun bearings if driven hard from cold, and oil starvation on track days. You can sort the former by warming up, the latter by fitting a baffled sump. Other than that, they are pretty bomb proof. You need to change oil and filter every 3k miles without fail and use fully synthetic. Nothing too thin either like 0w50. Castrol 10w60 seems good. the turbos are oil cooled (unlike the gtst) so if you punt it, oil temp will easily hit 120 which will necessitate an oil change. Fit and oil cooler and remote filter anyway (the factory location is a PITA). If you start drag racing at the lights etc, you will chew clutches, gearboxes, diffs etc etc. Drive sensibly and you will be fine. The brakes are fine for the stock car but truthfully a bit woeful given the power of the car I had. BBK would have been a good investment.

Its a very practical car, comfy and easy to drive. Took 4 adults away for the weekend easily. Fairly easy to work on too, and LOADS of parts available. www.nengun.com Mapped right, they are ok on fuel on the motorway (high 20s MPG). If you constantly punt it, the rev counter and the fuel gauge will pass each other at about the same pace.

Make sure you can get insurance before you buy one and get it inspected before you part with $.

That's about all I can think of.

If you are going to drive it daily then I would advise strongly against a modified one...Maybe just exhaust and filters that is it..That should be pretty reliable not to bad on petrol and servicing will not need to be anything more than every 10000 miles..
The real problem is if something does go wrong, being a skyline everything is very expensive..I took mine in for a service and MOT last year and it ended up costing almost £1500 and that was just bushes and things for the rear wheel steer.
If you want a tuned one that has been in the UK for 8 years and owned by me for the last 6 let me know as I am thinking about selling it due to my new job...

To be fair, that is just wear and tear on an old car and not really down to reliability. Most 10+yo performance cars will need a refresh. Agreed, they are not the cheapest thing to run, but then again, you are getting a LOT of bacg for your buck. you also need to remember it is the company flagship car, so might be cheap to buy but will cost more than a Micra to run...
