Impreza exhaust
Discussion
Just wanted to tap in on your vast knowledge to answer what is probably a simple question. I currently have an '06 Impreza STI which is pretty much completely standard. The problem is it sounds very standard as well. I basicaly want to make it sound a bit nicer (and i dont mean chavvy), but i dont want to spend a fortune (eg replacing the whole ex sytem). Any suggestions on what would sound good??
Depends really on what sort of sound you are after.
My 2001 WRX has got an unresonated centre section and a Prodrive back box, and to me sounds just right.
A lot of people will tell you this is still really quiet, and in comparison to many other systems it is, but I don't want a stupid loud jap style exhaust (I am in my mid 30's!).
When I get round to removing cats it will get louder still of course...

I have an 06 WRX and that was the same. I fitted a de-res centre and back box from Magnex. Its not too loud and the 6x4" tail pipe fits perfectly in the rear bumper, in fact, it wasnt really loud enough for me and im in my 30's and far from a boy racer. Iv replaced that system now though with a full 3" system from the turbo back with one cat removed and a sport cat which now makes the car sound perfect, very deep rumble, but not too loud! I went with the same tail design though, im not a big fan of the jap style systems.
A 2.5" system from Miltek or Hayward and Scott will do the job and will sound throbbier than a V8 but not super loud so it wakes the dead!! The Prodrive system is a good example and i think sounds very nice
British manufacturers too!!
You don't have to go the Jap route with a 3" system which is probably too much unless you're going for real power and have the mods further up front to support that. I find they tend to lose some of the throb and become quite raspy instead. I have the 3" system on mine from Kakumei with GT Spec GenII headers and 3-bolt decat uppipe, and everything else to support that but it has lost a lot of its throb when you're pushing on although while cruising around on low throttle it sounds fine.
When my car was still a standard WRX i changed the backbox for 2.5" TSL Stainless Steel GrpN box and installed a Zen Performance wrapped decat uppipe to aid turbo spool up. That sounded rich, very low throbby and rumbly...lovely!! That was fitted to the standard WRX OEM system and sounded really nice.
However, as testament to the quality of that TSL backbox and the fact that it's not super loud i have kept that on my car matched upto a 3" system to keep the noise down and it's sounds very good. Should get me onto most tracks without failing drive-by noise tests.
A whole turbo back H&S or Miltek system should cost about £350-£400 depending on where you go. It will transform the way the car goes and sounds. You can even get Stainless Steel twin pipe backboxes now but i haven't heard one to say if it sounds right. Personally i would stick with the proven single pipe.

Thanks for the advice. Soup what did it cost to do the original mods to you exhaust, do you recall??
The Magnex system was £330 delivered if i remember correctly and it would cost about £40-£50 to fit, unless you can do it yourself, its pretty straight forward. You cant go wrong with Miltex though, although i find they do lose some of the burble for some reason at top end of the revs as aleady said. Its a bit of a screamer;)stevieb said:

I can recommend the Hayward & Scott version. Good value, lovely throb & note, but not too intrusive.
Hows yours going now Andy?

Interesting pointers guys. Could anyone tell me this though... Does changing the back box on a 2.0 WRX (2004) to an after market system change the emissions output?
I want the classic burbling Scooby sound but do not want to get stung on my MOT.
wont change the emmisions at allI want the classic burbling Scooby sound but do not want to get stung on my MOT.
Hmm.
My engine is still with Roger Clark Motorsport.
The whole thing has been very frustrating, but they still have one of the best reputations for engine building around and getting hold of a Japanese EJ22 block is nearly impossible.
The engine as specced is to 500-600 bhp looking at the internals. I chatted to Matt about it at length and we decided to go for the 79mm crank to give about 2.33 litre displacement. It'll have the RCMS sump, uprated oil pump and already has very revised fuelling and RCMS headers.
I'm going to run it with a VF34 turbo and larger injectors just in case. It'll be good for about 350 bhp with very little lag. Any more and I'd need to start looking at the gearbox. Given how little I've seen the car this year I just want to drive it for a while!
How's life with you Charlie?
