IS220d oil consumption

Can anyone with one of these comment on their oil consumption, the old mans has used 2.5l in since it was serviced 3000miles ago; the service book says up to 1l/1000km is acceptible, but given that it is a modern jap diesel I'd have thought the tolerences were such that it shouldnt be using oil.
On the whole most diesels i've driven and owned have all enjoyed drinking oil. Some diesels more than others and needed servicing every 5000 miles.
My partner has an IS220D and i do the weekly maintenance checks on it and i have to say it uses a fair bit less than 1L per 1000Km, maybe c.600ml. She does 20K-30K miles a year, hasn't had the car that long (about 3.5mths) and is already within site of the first 10K mile service.
I would have said c.2L-2.5L of oil in 3000 miles is OK for a very modern diesel like the 220D. Bloody good engine though and you can hardly hear it in or out of the car until you put your foot down then it sounds like a bag of rusty nails being churned up but then that's oil burners for you.
Just one other thing....dealers rarely top the oil up to the mark when they have serviced it. Usually they fill it to half way or just below so maybe it really only used 2L of oil as from the bottom mark of the dipstick to the top it's 1L.
Personally i wouldn't worry about it as it seems pretty normal for these

My Mercedes diesel used a bit of oil in the first 15,000 miles and since then i rarely check it and it uses about 1 litre every 18,000 miles same went for my wifes Octavia diesel , again used a fair bit in the first 18,000 miles and now uses about the same as my Merc so it seems diesels can use a fair bit when running in but I wouldnt be happy having to put a significant amount in every 1000 miles thats for sure
