Hi There i'm new to Pistonheads and new to second hand car buying.

I have recently had to part with my company car which was a Skoda Octavia VRs 170pd and I absolutely loved it. At the moment I have no car and I am looking to buy a Japanese Import Subaru Legacy GTB. This is one of my all time favourite cars. i drove one in NZ and it blew me away.

I have noticed I can pick up a 1996 example for around £2.5K and a 1998 (facelift) for a bit more about £5K. The reason I have started this thread is that I really really want one! But i'm weary of buying a japenese import. Are british Subaru dealers able to look over it? Has anyone any idea what service costs are going to be? and to be honest what are the major pitfalls of buying one of these? I am aware they are quite expensive to run, but what shouold I be looking for mechanical wise when i'm looking at one. (Please bear in mind i'm not that good at engines but understand the basics) haha!

Also my other option is a Volvo 850R - there are plenty of those for sale at around the same sort of price but they all have between 110,000 and 160,000 miles on the clok is it wise to be spending so much money on one of these cars with such high mileage?

If there is anyone out there who can help me out, it would be great to hear from you.

Thanks for reading
Chris
