Following on from this thread:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I've fitted a new exhaust, spark plugs, air filter and cleaned the idle control valve with WD40. Each has helped a lot and it now starts and runs, but with a lumpy tickover and a slight misfire especially noticeable at low revs, then sometimes stalling. The HT leads are brand new, purchased by the previous owner to try and cure things.
I've put a can of fresh fuel in incase it was the 6 month old fuel in the tank causing it and it's still doing it. Part of me just wants to take it for a good thrash to try and clear things out as it hasn't had a good run for 6 months but it would be unwise to if the revs fluctuate on their own.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Just to add, the old cats had 2 oxygen sensors on, one before the first cat at the front (nearest the last 'U' of Subaru) and one immediately behind the cats cells (nearest the 'S' of Subaru)

The new cat only had one hole where for the first oxygen sensor, so I just disconnected the second one and left it - could this be effecting it?

Also the engine management light has been on for the last 2 years and 30,000 miles according to the old MOT advisory sheets.

If the check engine light is one there should be a fault code logged in the ECU to tell you why, wheck that and you may have your answer.

If its the same OBD as the Legacy then connect two plugs under the dash, turn ignition on and count the flashes of check engine light - long flash=10, short flash=1 so this gives you the fault code (ie long long short would be #21). Then google will help you find out what it means.

The engine management light's now gone out after disconnecting the battery. I think I'll try cleaning the throttle body out tonight to see if that helps.

Does an NA Forester have an AFM? I can't see one:

My NA Legacy certainly does, you can see it just after the airbox here:

I guess Foresters could be different though, never really looked at one.

hehe Not sure how recent that photo is, engine bay is a bit dusty now but still pretty clean tbh. Only 75km on it (46k miles) and its been looked after pretty well.

I'm going to be in Northwales later this week to see my daughter in Denbigh. I will be driving past your neck of the woods so i would be happy to make a small detour to see if my laptop can discover what's wrong with yours if you get no joy. Yours is a 2001 Reg so should be able to plug in to the OBDII port under the steering wheel and read your fault codes.

Let me know if i can help, just PM me. thumbup

Took the car for an MOT today, the misfire was still there but I was hoping a good run on the duel carriageway on the way there would help - it didn't. It failed the MOT on emissions which must be due to a bit of unburnt fuel coming through the exhaust. As of Monday I'm going to be working in Cardiff until Christmas so won't have the time to get it sorted so I'll probably just put it on Ebay with no reserve as a spares or repair.

If emissions is all it failed on it's a shame you're breaking it. All you need to do is fit that last O2 sensor in the exhaust and you're away.

Never mind. Good luck selling it, should still be worth a lot more than you paid for it selling the bits off for sure.

Francis, I can understand why the 2nd O2 sensor can cause the emissions to be too high but can't see why it's misfiring still. I've thrown a couple of hundred quid at it and it's still not perfect so I've decided to cut my losses and get rid.

Well I guess you had a couple of wins with the Clio and the 200SX. Hope you didn't lose any money on it.

I was still up even after taking account the SH exhaust, MOT fee, plugs, filter, Ebay listing fee and even the fuel to pick it up.

You win some and some you win even more wink
