Hey guys,

Still after a Celica GT (Gen 6), seen one on the Celica Club that looks really well looked after by an owner that obviously is good with spanners (Put a new interior in, etc) and he's got a garage full of celicas, seems he likes buying them and doing them up to sell, etc.

Only problem is the car has over 120,000 miles on, would it likely still be reliable as a main car? As I said before, it looks utterly mint on the outside, but I'm worried it's not going to have much life left in it...

Mine has 120k on and has been very reliable up until recently (the radiator went). Timing belt was an issue on mine though. Given that you service and maintain it properly, the 3SGE engine is fairly bulletproof. Just make sure its kept topped up. Very easy car to work on as well. Im sure there will be others who will be about shortly to advise you a little more. Just dont buy one with a stupid bodykit like i did, it'll annoy the poo out of you!

100K is about the time where things need replaced, purely through normal wear and tear.

If it's been mollycoddled it will go on for longer but on normal levels of dis/repair then 100K is where you'll start spoending money. Not to say don't go for it but be prepared you may have to get the timing belt/headgasket or the likes replaced.

Replacement 3SGE's are cheap though so it's sometimes easier to throw in a newer/low mileage engine.

I love my Celica, had it since June and it's great. Just be sure to avoid the Superstrut suspension unless it's been rebuilt recently. You do not want to know how much it costs for a full SS replacement.

Bugger, so I should try and look for something around the 80,000 mark? Have £2k and has to be an unmodded UK car, so my choices are limited frown

£2000 should get you a good celica GT. I paid that for my lightly modified ST202.

Unfortunately i found out after buying that it has the SuperStrut Suspension and now it's developing a squeak. Option is there to put all standard suspension back on but i digress.

Here's a nice one, does have SS suspension though : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toyota-Celica-GT-Import-ST202_W0QQitemZ200277569280QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item200277569280&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2

I paid £ 1600, for my 98 Celica GT (Uk version) with 125.000 miles on the clock and drove it for just over a year without any problems/failure.

I put new alloys and a sport exhaust (back box) under it and that was the only money i ever spend on it.

Sold it 13 months later with 134000 miles on the clock for £ 1650,

A little different, but I had the ST 1.8 with 160000 on the clock, no problems at all.

And it took you and a cylinder of laughing gas to finally kill it.

I'm still tempted by the 120,000 mile car, as I said the guy is an enthusiast and it seems it's been well cared for, partial service history as well, but it's going to be my only car so needs to be reliable... doh...
