Hi All,

Have decided to go the easy route and look at getting a PPP fitted ('05 WRX) - are dealers discounting these? I'd always thought the price was £1,600, but found out yesterday that it's apparently £1,600 + VAT which really does make it poor value for money.

Cheers,

Your money is better spent with a reputable tuner and you'll get a lot more for it in the end!! It's a 2005 car so now it's out of the original manufacturers warranty unless you only just bought the car and the dealer gave you 12mths warranty. If there's no warranty left then go for a pro tune.

I've got a map(ROM) on my laptop with Prodrive derived adjustments and it's lame. PPP is a waste of time and money!! IMHO PPP is neither an easy or sensible option unless you're under warranty and you really want it, in which case i would say wait until the warranty runs out and then go for a pro tune!!

Suggestion:
2nd hand VF35 Turbo and 2nd hand STi 565cc injectors. Walbro fuel pump. Snorkus mod and high flow air filter. Decat uppipe, high flow catted downpipe and 2.5" catback exhaust system. Get your exhaust headers ported at the same time and then get it mapped, all in for £1600. I have got a set of STi v.8 ported headers that will fit yours going for a sensible price if you go this route.

c.320-330bhp (as far as i would safely go on std WRX internals) and you have a mighty quick car that will rip the p155 out of a PPP'd STi!! Go figure!! hehe

Agreed. Bob Rawle is a lot cheaper, and will produce better (and bespoke) results. smile

Just for the record, I know there are lots of other really good tuners out there. It's just that he mapped my RA many years ago now...

Totally agree. This is the route I want to go with mine once i've paid the car off.

API do a similar package apparently that's under £2k and gets you around 320hp. PPP is only worth doing if you have a car that's still in warrenty.

Right,

Have sent out a few emails to get some feedback and have had replies from Zen (on a Sunday!) and Tracktive already - which is encouraging.

Paul from Zen suggested a full 2.5" Milltek system, Richard at Tracktive suggested their own 3" system, but I'm conerned that I'm going to end up with something that's just noisy, whereas I like the sound of this (TSL Pulse Extraction system:

Completely different cars, I know, but what can you guys suggest?

I'm all ears,

You can get cream for that!! hehe

Joking aiside.....

Forget the 3" exhaust unless you want to lose the majority of your burble/throb at anything over low revs and load, like it a lot louder than std and enjoy pissing off the neighbours, and are looking to make more than 350bhp!!

TSL Pulse extraction system....excellent bit of kit but very expensive. I considered this when i first bought my WRX wagon but for what i wanted to do at the time i felt it was prohibitively expensive and too good for the job so i bought their GrpN backbox instead to replace the std OEM twin pipe jobby which was very lame. The GrpN box released the burble very nicely indeed. Pulse extraction system is a very techy exhaust though, light as a feather and does exactly what it says on the tin. If you have money to burn go for that!! biggrin

Zen Performance....Paul Blamire.....Tuning God!! bow
If i didn't do my own mapping Paul would be the only one to touch my ECU in all honesty!! He is excellent and a worthy Time Attack winner!! Very reasonable labour rates, excellent service, workmanship and parts costs. Incidently....TSL use Zen Performance to do their mapping for them wink I cannot say enough good things about them and even in these tough times their appointment book is always full so god knows if you'll get in before xmas. Book early to avoid disapointment!!

The 2.5" high flow catted Miltek system is perfect for you. Retains that lovely burble/throb, just a tad louder than std but deeper cloud9, releases plenty of all important ponies in it's own right, and i highly recommend you purchase their slip jointed decat uppipe and have it fitted at the same time as IMHO it's a pointless excercise without it!! Very highly recommended, definately the one to go for and MOT emissions test friendly!! You wouldn't get chucked off at Bedford Autodrome either with this exhaust and their noise limits are as tight as you will get!!

Go for it and enjoy!! yes

Right,

Spoke to Paul @ Zen this morning and I'm booked in for next Weds for the following:

3" Milltek sports cat system
De-cat up-pipe (wrapped)
Walbro pump
Silicon intercooler hoses
Tek 3 remap

Getting excited now...

PS - Should have asked Paul earlier, but is there anything to do near them? Greasy spoon? Massage parlour, Garden centre?!

Cheers,

Animal

Animal,
What are you expecting/been quoted for output as a result of all this and, if you don't mind me asking, what have they said it will cost?
Cheers

Hi David,

Paul suggested that 275BHP / 280lbs/ft would be a reasonable result for a car that was sensibly and reliably mapped without changing the turbo or sacrificing driveability.

I'd guess that if you were to do the same to a 2.5 engine you'd probably end up with a fair bit more torque.

Don't know the final numbers yet, but will post the results afterward and can email you costs after I've seen the bill if you like?

Cheers,

Alex

About bloody time!! Nice one!! thumbupbiggrin

Wellingborough isn't the most exciting place in the world hehe
Personally i would be wanting to see what is going on and spend my day seeing the mods being fitted and having a chat with the mechanics fitting your kit and Paul while he is mapping the car over a hot cup of coffee, if you're that way inclined biggrin

But i'm a sad git so i would yes

I looked into PPP myself and doing it after market is without a doubt the best way to go. As said, you get more back for your money and it should cost less than PPP.
I have done a simular conversion on my 2.5 and on the rollers at powerstation it made 282bhp so not that much different from the 2.0, but produced 320lbsft which is quite substantial. It was a hot day when it went on the rollers so possibly would be running a little more under normal UK conditions.
