mechanical boost controllers
Discussion
Anyone using gate type boost controllers? Heard you can get up to 20hp if you explore an extra 0.2 bar in a standardish impreza turbo. and with the fuel cut defender it should keep the engine safe? obviously if your not reving it up at 1.2 bar to the redline all the time. any toughts?
if you are talking about a bleed valve where you manually set it to bleed air off before the actuator then i would strongly advise you dont fit it, they may give the desired effect but can cause the boost pressure to spike way above a safe limit causing engine failure.
get a good quality computer controlled type which uses a solenoid to control the boost level, these often have a safe mode to prevent the likes of boost spike, although expensive they are usually the best way and can often be had used for a lot less with instructions available of the manufacturers web site.

I expect he is talking about a ball and spring valve, which are ok, much better than bleed valves.
yes. turbosmart do them!i done the bleed valve thing on my r5 gtt, it went bang
but could have been a number of thingscheers
depends on the engine, depends on how much boost you want.
If you are talking a *little* more boost with a decat and an air intake, a spring valve is FINE. avoid bleed valves, as has been said.
if you are getting to the limits of the injectors, turbo, or whatever, then go electronic and think about fuel pumps, injectors etc as you don't want to run the risk of boost spikes or knock.
mechanically, there is nowt wrong with a decent MBC (manual boost controller) setup.

remember also that altering the exhaust and induction by fitting a de-cat and filter will change the characteristics of the turbo, on my 96 wrx it had quicker spool and required setting up the boost controller (electronic solenoid type) again as the quicker response from the turbo was causing it to ocasionally spike above the safe limit, the HKS unit i used had the ability to set a safe limit which if breached would set the boost to 5 psi IIRC to avoid damage.

Crude IMO.
Aren't you a fresh spring of knowledge! thanks very much for sharing. i would like to discuss it further but your contribution just gave me a headache!
read a book will you, or maybe, get a car first. My answer was based on a vast experience of cars thanks very much.
I've owned 5 impreza's (when they were a bit more rare) an Evo 8, DC2, DC5, 2 S2000s, and now an Exige S. All of them well modified. I've been involved in tuning of cars for a long time.
I tried a Dawes Device and I believe they are a crude way to get some power. A remap is a much more profesional way of doing it.
If you want more power, IMO do it properly.
And try not to be so rude - i'm sure you wouldn't say that to someone in real life.

You got issues! Like prejudice.
And I AM rude. look in the mirror first.
" I've owned a lot of classic scoobs... the vast majority of them are now owned by people with less teeth than they should normally have, tatoos, window tints, large stereos, vta dump valves, baseball hats, rally stickers all over them and a lot of chains dangling from them."

That's not being rude, it's an unfortunate fact.
You declined to add the bit where I said "there are plenty of normal scoob owners" I'm not so blinkered that I would tar everyone with the same brush. I like the car, no question.
But anyway, this thread was supposed to be about MBC's???
Have you bought one yet?

This is the very reason i rarely post, imparting usefull info seems to be ignored in favour of anything that can be argued whether related or not, regardless of the contributions length it is usually relevent when trying to gather a general opinion, "crude IMO" was, im sure, intended to be helpfull and not ammo for an argument.

+1 this is why i stay as far from the engine forum as i can. MB 1 said:

On a side note, Ive got a Greddy Profec B Spec II Electronic boost controller, and its quite good, got settings for the spool up, consistency and wastegate duty (obviously). Easy to tune, recommended IMO.
Also, I used one of them ball and spring boost controllers (Dawes) on my old 200sx, and it worked perfectly also, it didnt have the bonuses of the EBC but it was fine, and it got it holding 15psi all day long, never any spikes.

Agree, good controller too.
For cars with unmappable ECU's, there are stand alone units such as the apexi power fc which has an option for a solenoid to be included in the map, expensive but if you have the cash to repair/replace the engine after using a poor setup im sure you would rather it went on a good setup in the first place.

Most EBCs are better than the Power FC boost control. Thats why you see many people with PowerFC but seperate boost controllers. Apparently the boost control in Power FC is too slow to respond, but this is only what I have heard, I have never used it.For cars with unmappable ECU's, there are stand alone units such as the apexi power fc which has an option for a solenoid to be included in the map, expensive but if you have the cash to repair/replace the engine after using a poor setup im sure you would rather it went on a good setup in the first place.
