Impreza STI Goes Auto

Hot Impreza gets paddle shift in Japan

A new automatic version of Subaru’s Impreza WRX STI has been announced in Japan.Launching what could become the ultimate tool for carving-up the SUV brigade on the school run, Subaru has made sure its new Impreza WRX A-Line model comes with all the necessary go-faster trimmings.

There’s Prodrive-developed SPORTSHIFT, a paddle shift feature allowing manual operation without requiring the driver to release the steering wheel, as well as DBC – or Downshift Blipping Control. The latter does what it says on the label, as the auto tranny’s ECU interacts with the engine management system to increase engine revs instantly to the required level.

Apparently the paddle shift can also be used ‘temporarily’ without setting the main selection lever to manual, presumably allowing the driver to take maximum advantage of sudden openings in the Tokyo traffic. Other than a new paint colour – satin white pearl, pictured – the new A-Line model is also offered with 8-way electric front seats.

The WRX A-Line shares the same 2.5 litre turbocharged Boxer engine as the manually-shifted STI, as well as the rest of its running gear. That means you still get 300PS at 6200rpm and 350Nm of torque, grip to die for and whopping 17ins-front and 16-ins rear stoppers. Oh, and a practical hatchback with plenty of space for all the kids’ football gear.

So is this for the JDM only?

Don't they have the 2.0 boxer unit in them not the 2.5?

Idd eek will a 17" stopper fit in a 20" wheel?

20" wheel on a hatchback??

Hmm... those brake sizes were in the official launch notes from Japan. Perhaps something was 'lost in translation'.

There is no way it's running a 430mm disc.

Only a few years behind Mitsubishi in offering an automatic in an extreme car.

Seriously though, who buys such things?

If your interested in buying an extreme car, why would you dilute it with a slush box. It's like putting an automatic in a Caterham, it's silly!

At last! Someone who talks sense. Somone whose manhood doesn't depend on rear wheel drive , a heavy clutch and heavy gear change. You Luddites might as well face it- soon your left leg might as well be amputated. Join the 21st Century.

tongue out

Bugger off, I like changing gear myself!

And it really doesn't worry me that a complicated, expensive computerised system can swap cogs 0.0026s faster than me when I'm heel/toeing my way down a favourite back road. wink

So is this an Auto or is it a manual with electronic control over the shift, like the BMW SMG?

The writeup suggests a manual with electronic shift if it needs an auto blip throttle and is the same box as the manual STI.

I will stick with manual myself. I have driven the Celica with paddle shift and it really does lack driver appeal. Ok, the Toyota system is really pants, but the experience is going to be pretty much the same. I will go auto when i am ready to go for an executive cruiser.

Some cars i admire and really love have paddles shift only (challenge stradale) and im trying to embrace this newish technology .
But i really enjoy shifting gear myself , it just gives me a deeper interaction between me and my car . I suppose if i ever could afford a skyline i wouldnt mind the auto shift because the car a techno marvel anyway .
Ps do you think subaru would ever make a 3 door version of there new shape car ?
Maybe it would suit 3 instead of 5 doors?

As you a guess from my user name I am a dreaded Subaru owner.

As someone has said on here all Impreza's are ugly, remember the Bugeye model? You buy it becuase it does 0-60 in under 5 seconds and 0-100 in under 12, has character (boxer engine) and goes round corners well in all weathers, not because it looks pretty. Think of it as an ugly looking dog that only the owner can love or a marmite car. There are plenty of pretty cars that go a lot slower or cost a lot more if you want one, but you will not find another new £25K hatchback that you can put the family in that does 0-60 in 4.4secs after fitting an approved performance pack for £1600.

That's why I have a Hatchback 2008 STI and use it everyday, it's a good car, not great, but good.

I know 2 people who drive old Impreza autos imported from Japan (they also did previous models in Auto) and they love them, but they don't like marmite...

Clearly you haven't heard that most supercars (now im not saying the scooby is a supercar) are speced with autos!

also i heard of a 4speed auto scooby drag car that was running vertually stock drivetrain and making about 1000bhp and running very fast! smile

Chris.
