why do you hate to say it?
Just because they hawk their wares all over every forum. I've used them and they seem good. I just found their ability to jump on every forum a bit irritating.I thoguht the RX8 just took a standard semi synth. Whatever the owners club are bound to know the grade/specification you need.
Castrol Magnatec 5w30 A1 is what I use, its fine and easy to get hold of
RX8 uses semi-synth' oil. If you check on Castrols site, iirc, they list the Magnatec as fully-synth or "uses fully-synth' technology." Either way it makes it sound like it might be synthetic oil which apparently isn't suitable for the RX8. It is definitely semi-synth' and correct and safe to use though.

The RX8 is notoriously oil thirsty. You might be better off buying shares in a Saudi oil field it may work out cheaper in the long run
a litre every 1600 miles ain't all that bad

The difference between VAG "Acceptable" oil consumption and the rotary oil consumption is that most piston engines dont use anywhere near whats suggested. Rotary engines do. But thats not a problem until people who dont care about these things try and run one....

I actually had to thnk which engine you were suggesting needs rebuilds. Which says a lot about how I percieve VAG!

If you do some googling for "audi oil consumption" you'll probably find that it's more common than you think! The difference between VAG "Acceptable" oil consumption and the rotary oil consumption is that most piston engines dont use anywhere near whats suggested. In my opinion, the fact that the RX is 'reknowned' for it's high consumption means the uneducated will run a mile at the thought of it, whereas an Audi with it's 'german reliability' is more likely to be neglected by a naive owner buying into the stereotype!
