What-o chaps 
After many years of discounting Japanese cars through nothing but snobbery, I have finally done the decent thing and bought a 'Beast from the East'.
1999 Subaru Legacy B4. Unfortunately auto, but it does have a sport mode and tiptronic so you can change gear manually.
It was a great price, and even came with a suitably Jap plate. Spells 'Sake'
Coming back from the South Coast, I was astounded by it's cross-country ability. Simply reeling in normal traffic and blasting past. It's a revelation to drive something so planted and compact with that kind of performance - It really did make overtaking a safe, enjoyable experience
On the motorway, it feels kind of isolated and quiet, and so the performance doesn't feel all that astounding. It's only when you look down and discover that the last squeeze of throttle took you from 50 to 100mph in just a few short seconds that you realise how capable the car is.
Shame it's not manual, but for £2500 it's a cracking bit of kit.
Now, how can I make it sound like a rally car and go faster?

A aftermarket exhaust can make that flat 4 sound louder. a remap of some description will get you some more power too. Vixpy1 knows about remapping subaru engines i think.
I will be sure to drop him a mail. Hopefully I'll catch him between 'sessions' when he's not in the gimp suit
