for my first car i would like to have something that is japanese but i cannot seem to find any that i like that dont cost a fortune.
Does anyone know of any japanese cars that are in group 5/6 ot below that cost about 1-1.5k to buy ?

theres loads of decent old civics around, nissan almeras, mr2s. look on ebay to get a price range idea.

You'll struggle to insure any mr2, mk1's are group 13 and mk2's group 16.

I have looked at civics because i like the body shape but the problem is insuring the car because all insurance companies know that most people buy a civic to modify it and race so they cost a fortune to insure.
Im not sure about the almera because im not sure about the bodyshape.
An mr2 would be nice but again it all comes down to insurance.
I dont really want to be paying more than £2500 for insurance and although that is a high price trust me insurance companies are giving ridiculous quotes for every car i choose.
I tried a 1.3 ford ka and the insurance from confused.com was around 2400

I like the old corolla's and i have always liked the engine because of the legendary ae86 which uses the same engine and is an amazing car.
I will check insurance later but i think it will be high because it is japanese and a gt model car.
I also like some of the third and fourth generation corolla's as well but they are very rare and hard to find.
I also think these are nice but i darent even get a quote on insurance because i know it will cost a fortune.

I have just checked insurance for an the ae82 corolla as someone suggester and the quote i got was £2800 for a year.
This is quite high looking at some of the other quotes ive had but i have to say i would prefere this car compared to any of the other ive had quotes for.
Can some1 find me the technical data on the ae82 please so that i can find out how much power it has etc.

Here's a mad suggestion: buy an old K10 Micra. You can drive it on the door handles and still hardly break any road traffic laws, they are virtually bombproof and should only be group 2 insurance. Plus, when you gain a bit of no claims bonus, supercharge it. The lads in the workshop next door to mine have a supercharged Micra 1.2, and it's bloody quick.

I was thinking about mentioning the micra earlier but then i thought that id better now because someone would take the mick.
I had seen on in my town that has colour coded bumpers that have been smoother down and the rest of the car has been smoothed with it and it looked rather nice but the problem is they are lacking in the performance and street cred area.

Unfortunatly the terms 'performance' and 'cheap insurance' are, generally speaking, mutually exclusive. Unless you pay a silly amount for insurance, you'll be stuck with boggo bare-arse dog slow base models for your first motor. Would you consider anything non-Jap? What about a classic car? Often you'll get cheaper insurance on something classic.

Im not so sure about the land rover because i hate jeeps because most of them are brought purely for school runs and have never seen offroad and if i brought one it would never go offroad which would annoy me slightly.

Also i have looked at the starlet sr before and they are £1500 to buy and about £2600 to buy which is in budget but i poster this thread to see if it had any competitors or if there were any other low insurance group jap cars out there
