Engines are the same pretty much.

The front lights are different, but it was mainly a just a facelift. Mechanically they are almost identical.

ECUs are different, NATs system is different and the S14a has two cats. Most of it is just the same as mentioned, head over to sxoc.com.

There is a sticky with the differences. S14 looks like a Mundaneo. wink

different manifold on the manual ones - S14a has no EGR take off, S14 has it and changing the turbo will mean chiseling off the egr pipe and either welding over the hole or getting hold of an S14a manifold.

Before you change the turbo there is a lot of upgrade work needed (unless you con't plan on using the turbo).

bigger Fuel pump - necesary
colder plugs - necessary
front mount intercooler - probably necessary
boost control 'system' - necessary
boost guage - necessary
induction kit - necessary
free flow exhaust - necessary
The above will get you to stage 1 tune on existing turbo, injectors and internals - however clutches start to go at this level of tune and sometimes gearboxes.

Ideally you would also want a Stage 1 map as well, but its not absolutely necessary.
and thats the bare minimum - the above will set you back 1-1.5k new.

Really at Stage 1 you should also be thinking about getting your brakes and suspension sorted cos you have now gone from 200-280 bhp. This again will set you back 1k+

If you go for a different turbo you will need a remap again. Depending on the turbo you could also be talking new clutch, bigger injectors, strengthened internals, change of AFM. Both AFM or new injectors would also result in a need for a remap.

So unless you have several thousand pounds burning a hole in your pocket I wouldn't worry about choosing S14/S14a based on a turbo change.

Performance wise there is no difference, interior wise either. The s14 may look like a mondeo, but there are some very nice looking ones around that look better than most s14a's. Most people change the wheels on the car, and choosing the right wheels make a huge difference to the look and stance of the car.

S14 and S14a like people have said is largely cosmetic - mechanically they are almost identical except emmissions related stuff

front wings, lights, grill, bonnet, bumper, splitter, indicators
Rear lights
instrument clocks are different
Front Bumper
Steering Wheel
Instrument Cluster (Clocks)
The S14 has an EGR system and a main cat
The S14a has no EGR and 2 cats (the exception being the S14a Auto which has EGR)
Turbo Elbow and Downpipe are different
AFM's have a different plug

think thats all the important stuff.
