A few questions owners should be able to breeze through
Assuming I'm looking at getting a GTS-T as near as possible to standard, so not a highly modified one:
-What's the servicing costs like on these?
-Do they need specialist attention as per the GTR or would any good garage be able to find there way around and make sure it's all tickety-boo?
-Should they be pretty much reliable as long as it's a good 'un?
There's no Skyline specialists around my area (Sunderland, Tyne & Wear) and not really sure about any Jap/Tuner type garages local to me either.
Thanks in advance

Your answers for your questions are as;
1) If you buy the service parts yourself and pay a mechanic you trust to do the work it's no more expensive than getting a vauxhall serviced at a main dealer i reckon-a corsa at that!! RB engines like good quality oil though £45- 5 litres. Spark plugs (NGK) x6 £48, oil filter nissan sunny £3.80.
2) Specialist attention. Well if it's not driving or feeling how it should, taking it to a specialist does pay off. They know what to look for straight away and what possibly could be causing the issues. Also for tuning see a specialist or fellow owner.....
3) Oh yeh there reliable. Had mine 3yr, used everyday as a daily driver or when needed, serviced when needed say every 7000-8000 miles. Only problems i had when i got mine were the coilpacks were worn out mis-firing when on boost and the battery couldn't handle our cold weather in it's first winter.
Any decent mechanic should be able to service it. It's only a 6cyl engine with a turbo on it. It's just finding a decent one. There's plenty of rough r33's about that may have been tuned wrongly. You do indeed pay for what you get though with these.
Have a look at skylineowners.com usually some for sale on there and PLENTY of helpfull people in the know. Or you could buy mine everyone has there price!! I'm always on the look out for something else to keep me busy.

Lol, I haven't even put the RX8 up for sale yet. This is just a barebones of an idea at the minute
I'd always assumed them to be fairly reliable. It was just I joined the GTROC recently and found a several page thread about running costs and I'd say probably 80% of those that posted, had massive engine failures leading to rebuilds not long after buying them and (possibly a bit of willy waving) claimed that they were averaging anything from £700-£1000+ per-month on them. To say that reading it dampened my enthusiasm is an understatement! lol

willy waving. You've probibly just hit the nail on the head!Sounds like that proved my point. It sounds like they bought rough ones, or have been wrongly tuned which has led to detonation. Hence the expensive rebuilds. All i can say to be spending 700-1000 a month on there car is they must have a very good job, eat alot of beans on toast or still live with there parents.
I spent 9 months looking for a standard gtst-so i knew what had been done to it. No improper fettling. Since getting it, i researched and asked questions to fellow owners and tuners as to how to achieve what i want from the car and it's paid off massivley. Knowing what limits each componant has, taking them there then upgrading when it becomes neccessary. Saves alot of time and money!! From what i've learnt im now able to advise others as to how to go about it and give reasons why.
Like i said above it's just a car with an engine with a turbo. An engine built to race (standard internals will handle 500bhp)de-tuned to sell to the public in accordance with touring car rules.....
A local mechanic serviced mine when i got it and he said the block was very similar to a jaguar 6cyl- massivly better internals and reliability though LOL.
I'd have thought an RX7 would hurt the wallet with the rotary rebuilds/tuning and the 20mpg consumption??? You'll have spare cash if you swap haha.....Seems to be a few gtst's coming up for sale on the forum, a result of the reccession unfortunatley.
have you tried vine place up your way, they have a good selection of motors.
Not heard a bad word from anyone who's bought from them.

Standard they are pretty dull though no quicker than a RX-8
Been looking around specs on the net and this is what's been playing in my head for a few days too. Might put the Skyline idea on the back burner and look into the over avenue's I've been considering (a couple of which are waaaay different to a Skyline or RX8 lol). The TLC doesn't bother me, as long as the car is generally reliable and not fragile I don't mind keeping my eyes and ears on things and keeping it well servicedliner33 said:
Thats the thing stock they have two stage boost so what hp they have is right at the top end, modified they are a different story they can be a great car but will swallow best part of £10k to get them that way .
Unless you are cautious and know what to look... in which case for you could buy one properly modified for a lot less than 10k
Got to admit I found the standard ones I drove a bit dull.
Thats why I bought a well known modified one (picture and spec in my profile garage).
The trouble that I had with mine was the AFM not working properly which I fixed myself, by cleaning with guidance from the skyline owners club.
ECU relay went, meaning I had a problem with the car cutting out. This was a nightmare to sort out as I had all the symptoms of an air leak which could never be tracked down.
To be honest I used to warm mine up right and leave the turbo timer on after a blast out to let it cool down.
Considering mine was putting out 400bhp at the wheels it was a cheap car to run. Actually spent a fair but on nitrous too.
