TVR to Skyline

Anyone make the swap from a TVR (Chimaera in my case) to a Skyline GTR? I'm thinking I would like an R33, got a baby now so need something with 4 seats!! Are the running costs comparable between the two? How about reliability?

You'll be saving money at the petrol station for sure!! If you buy a well looked after one it'll be no different to jumping in a primara everyday to runabout in........until you want some fun of course. Test drive one on a good run a lightly modfied one should be around 380bhp if not more.

I've thought about going from my GTST to a TVR-love the sound of a V8. But i just don't want to take the risk of having to pour money into something that could break down frequently. Mine is my daily drive when i need it so reliable power is what i need from a car. Correct me if im wrong about the reliability of a TVR it's just i've heard only issues with these as daily drives.

I may have been lucky, but for the 3 and a half years that I drove the TVR as an everyday car I never had a single problem in about 50,000 miles. The only time I started having trouble is when I stopped using it for longish periods! That was mainly electrical stuff though, engine has never missed a beat, and other stuff is just general wear and tear as it's a high mileage motor now. As it happens the Tiv has been off the road for the last 3 years, but that's my fault rather than the cars! Should be back on the road next week though, so want to enjoy the summer we have left in it, then think about buying a Skyline. Always liked the look of them, and the speed and reliability of a Jap car appeals to me hugely!

Driving any car regularly is better for them than storing them. As your experiencing now with the electricals. Your not lucky just common sense and the fact it's a car and it's there to enjoy-and so you should! I've heard of newer subaru's than mine tht have been stored, taken out in nice weather then blown up because they've been stored half the year. It's not age or make related just lack of regular use. I'm definantly a tuner not a polisher!!

I find my self looking at the V8's to enjoy a summer with like you mention-roof down a tunnel run or 2. Just can't tear myself away from the reliable power i have at the minute. So affordable the running of these what i call a Japanese Cosworths, don't think you'll be disapointed with a GTR version at all.

The Nissan may break down less but the parts it does break cost a whole lot more.

MPG all depends on how you drive. I know i don't run a GTR but i can get 280miles (maybe more if i don't mess about bringing boost on) to a 50 litre tank of juice. 26+ mpg on long runs.

It's when you get bored and bring on the boost it starts to nose dive rather alot. There to enjoy though arn't they.

I doubt it costs more to fix/maintain a skyline than a TVR. Anything major that breaks could be due to abuse, irregular maintenance or bad tuning. If your lucky abit of everything!!: Owners clubs are abundant with parts if you do ever need anything. Way easier than going to local nissan garage who don't have a hope in hell of helping you.

It's also cheaper to fit upgraded parts from a tuner than the original equipment parts from nissan themselfs. So you get stronger more capable parts in the process. E.g Brake discs and pads....

If you know where to look it can/will fit your budget. Hence i don't have a tvr because i don't have the time to look or go anywhere if things go tits on one!!
