Subaru Impreza STI 1998 misfire
Discussion
I can't remember if on the classic like newage the the engine won't run until the dash is plugged in therefore your intermittent misfire may be as a result of a lose connector on the back of the dash. Alternatively check all main power connections from the battery back and ECU connectors, just checking to make sure all connectors are on firmly with nothing loose or broken off.
If a coil pack was going wrong or you had dodgy plugs, bad AFR's etc... a check engine light would show indicating misfire but your dash wouldn't be resetting itself so seeing as you don't have a light showing it's more than likely a connector or shorting issue.

The above sounds plausible enough...... is it at any particular point on the rev range or speed or literally random?
Misfires seem to be a common problem with a thousand causes on these cars, my classic sti had a misfire recently I cured it eventually, here is my list of things to check (all of them can occur without a check light)
1) Spark plugs need replacing / regapping
2) While checking above check leads / coil packs for degradation
3) MAF sensor dirty / faulty - clean it with carb cleaner / electrical component leaner
4) Boost control solenoid dirty - clean through with carb cleaner (on classics in diagnostic mode it clicks and pumps the clearner through)
5) Boost piping loose / split
All worth a look. Hope you fix it!
