What impreza next?
Discussion
Hi,
I need to replace my impreza this year and one of the options is simply to get another impreza. I currently have a MY99 classic turbo wagon which isn't modified except for a back box.
Which impreza would be good to replace mine with for about 9k. I don't necessarily need a wagon although it would be slightly more practical I guess. I'll be using it for commuting and occasionally driving the family about it so nothing too mental in terms of low ratio gearboxes and so on. I would also like it not be too temperamental or unreliable so nothing massively old. I had to put a new engine in mine and it was a time consuming exercise that I could have done without.
Thanks,
Mark

For £9000 you could just about get a MY06 Impreza WRX either saloon or estate. The 2006 model year has the 2.5 engine rather than 2.0 so loads more torque, superior suspension, gearbox revisions with a better synchro on 1st and more. I have the prodrive performance pack on mine too for a bit of extra oomph. Makes an excellent every day car without going down the STI route.
For the money it may be a higher mileage car (perhaps 40k +) but I would say better than a 2004/2005 blob eye with 25k which would be similar money I would expect.
Also well worth considering holding some money back for other mods, highly recommend a 22mm Whiteline rear anti roll bar and a set of drop links to transform the handling, especially good with the prodrive lowering springs.

Very nice, I like that a lot.

I'd always go for the STI because I prefer the way it performs. I personaly couldn't live with having a WRX when I know the STI is such a better experience for not much more cash.
Same here. Most WRX owners spend loads on trying to bring their car up to STI spec. Just buy the STI in the first place.
It is a very good platform for further tuning.A remapped 2005 STI should easily be had for aboyt £8k. For the budget you should get a good one with a few choice extras.
If its a UK model, you should see 340bhp with realistic and reliable mods.
If you can handle things like the indicators on the other side, you could get a twinscroll JDM with around 360bhp and a lot less lag.
If classics are more your thing, P1's can be had for a lts less, but you'll get the same drive (as its the same drivetrain) from and STI5/6 (4door), for a lot less.

It is a very good platform for further tuning.A bit of a generalisation that "most" WRX owners spend a fortune making it like an STI. I didn't buy an STI as I didn't like the huge rear wing, the pink decals, the blue seats, or the fact if someone overheard my pub talk about my STI, well... ya know...
WRX is cheaper to buy by a fair margin. A WRX with an exhaust and remap or the ppp is quicker to 60 in real driving as the STI requires 3rd gear to reach 60. The WRX handles better on a rough road (like most in the UK) as there is slightly more compliance in the suspension. An uprated anti roll bar at the rear is what you need to transform the handling.
I had seriously looked at the STI spec D as it would give me an STI without the bits already mentioned that I'm not keen on, but seems daft to spend £4k+ making the change when the driving experience is really very similar.
Back to the OP - I would always try getting the newest low mileage car I can, the link to the black hawkeye above seems a fair price, well worth trying one out.
ETA: I still feel a 2006 WRX would cover all your reqs, and coming from a standard classic Impreza performace should be adaquate, and easily uprated slighty with the common exhaust, filter, remap.

Yep - I tried a Spec D and loved it, but for £5k less I got a same age and mileage WRX SL (so leather, heated front seats, electric sun roof, etc) and PPP (so 261bhp) - it's even the same colour! 12 months and 12k miles so far - apart from routine servicing it's only needed two tyres so far.
Yes, I'd have preferred the Spec D but £5k buys a lot of nappies, baby lotion and teddy bears.

Well I don't need to buy any of those, but totally agree, in real life everyday driving the ppp WRX is such a similar experience for much less. Incidentally I have the prodrive lowering springs on mine and makes it handle soooo much better without poor comfort, and uprated rear anti roll bar really makes a difference too. WRX PPP all the way!Hol said:

I wish i'd known that a few weeks back, i searched high and low and the cheapest 2005 spec sti's i could find where starting at 10k, in the end i located a type uk with ppp, and after a bit of bartering got it for £9400, i've not seen a 2005 spec one this cheap anywhere with reasonable mileage. If you know where you can get them from for 8k let me know, i might buy another to sell on

I'm not a massive Impreza fan, but I've always secretly lusted for a nice P1.
