I am considering a Gen 6 Celica GT-Four at the moment but cant seem to find ANY uk ones for sale. The reason I would prefer a UK one is that the Insurance is roughly £350 cheaper than an imported one for me.

How many were there and where does anyone know of a decent owners club site? I have done a search for a few and most were terrible, I think Celica Sport was one of them.

thanks in advance

Which insurance company are you seeing that difference with?

A decent insurer such as Chris Knott, A-Plan, Sky etc should not charge you any more for the import.

The prices I have found are based on when I turn 21 (a month away) tried the obvious comparison sites but they were wanting almost £1500, elephant came out as £700 for a UK one and just over a grand for the Import, Phoned NFU (current insures) and they wouldn't insure the import but the UK i could get for £660.

Will check out the others too though, thanks.

Does no-one know of one for sale then?

get yourself on gt4oc and have a look there, probably most likely to find a UK car there, but then if you can get insurance for the same price from a decent insurer, getting a jap import will no longer be an issue.

What info do you need? They are ostensibly the same as the imports. Its not like the ST185 shape where the japanese market got about 5 different variants.

I was mainly trying to find what the differences were parts wise and also how many there were bound for the UK.

Parts differences almost none, just obvious stuff like clocks in kmh, no rear fog on the import cars.

I was in a similar situation when I got mine (young driver, £1k more for insurance on an import (with Elephant too)) and it was just a case of checking the ads frequently. In the end it took me about a year to find a good unmodified UK car and it turned out to be a WRC too which was a bonus.

It's a pity you're so far away; I'd happily take you for a spin.

ETA: Ebay is worth looking at, as most of them are classifieds anyway these days. Here is a UK one, but it's hard to tell condition and it is a long way from you!

If you're going to insure with Elephant, try adding your mother as a named driver if possible - it may cut your quote by 25%.

Already added my mum, dad and girlfriend, all of which brought it down.

I'm GT4OCs web developer - this is being fixed shortly with the launch of a new site.

In the mean time, if there's anything you want to know just ask away on the site smile We're a friendly bunch smile

Toyota only produced 2,500 homologation cars and of those only around 300 came to Europe so they're comparatively rare. Having said that, they produced a lot more non-homologation models in all markets. The problem you'll have is that while the ST205 was on sale in Japan for five years, it was only on sale for 2 in the UK.

Thanks Gaz, that does explain why there are so few of them then. Were the homologation ones the "WRC's" or were these just an addition? I've read they come with the bar for the water spray and also (may be slightly off with this) the wiring or ability to have the anti-lag, but just missing a few things in that department also.

The homologation models are the WRCs that you'll find, yes. They were all manufactured in 1994 so most are L registrations, with a few Ms I think.

To be honest, there's very little practical difference between a WRC model and a regular car. The WRC ones do indeed come with extra plumbing for a water spray bar and a disabled anti-lag system for the turbo, along with some extra things that are also disabled. The WRC models came with a high-rise rear wing too.

UK cars had ABS as standard, but only manual aircon. JDM cars had optional ABS and full-auto climate control, amongst other benefits.

What are the other things that were disabled? Is it simple to get them working? Programing? fitting extra swithces once you find the wiring etc?

I know of owners that have reactivated the antilag system but I don't know how. There's nothing particularly exciting anyway, nobody tends to bother trying to reactivate any of the extra gubbins.
