350Z and RX8 Running Costs
Discussion
Hey all,
I'm currently looking for a new car and top of the list is a 350Z. I used to own a couple of RX-8's and I was just wondering if there was anyone on here who has owned both and could enlighten me with information about their comparative running costs (just so I can get a handle on what to expect should I stump up the readies and buy one)
I'd probably only use it for around 4-5K miles a year but it will be used on track days also.
Thanks for any and all info.

I think otolith had or has both. Maybe they can be of some help.
Overall I suspect they are not so different. The Nissan should be slightly better on fuel, but only buy £300-500 over a year if it's only 5000 miles.
I suspect servicing and such will be similar too. 350z is a bit bigger and heavier so my expectation is it'll be a bit harder on tyres and brakes, especially on a track.

I looked into buying an RX8 a couple of months ago and it wasn't the fuel consumption that made me decide against it, it was the fact that some can use upto a ltr of oil a month and some don't.....and there didn't seem to find an explanation for it.
Unless you bought a new one you couldn't gaurantee that it had never run low on oil thus causing damage.

I agree not knowing how a car has been looked after in the past is difficult to gage. But that is true of any car no matter te make.
As for the oil, I beleive they are meant to burn some. Just like a 2 stroke is meant to. So it means it is normal and even expected. As for cost? Well a litre a month is hardly going to break the bank, a procesed sanwich from Tescos will cost you more.

Both of my RX-8's hardly used any oil, it is a mssive myth that they slurp down as much oil as petrol (I found about 1 litre every 2-3000 miles - hardly excessive for a sports car).
My main concern would be the increased weight of the 350Z and its effect on consumables such as tyres and brakes as these are normally the most expenisve to replace.
Still, i just ordered new discs for my clio V6 and that came to around £1200 all in so they cant be as bad as that

can't comment on Rx-8 costs but zeds are suprisingly cheap.
Expect anywhere between 20-30 mpg average depending on what kind of driving you do.
Servicing by Nissan is anywhere between £150 - £350 depending on what service you need and which garage you go to. cheaper still if you go to independants. mine hasn't burnt any oil in the last 4k miles.
Tyres can be got for about £80 a corner if you go for Falkens (which are quite highly rated over on 350z-uk) or about £150 ish a corner if you go for Bridgestones.
A quick look on ebay shows a pair of brake disks start around £150 ish, and pads from around £85 ish and upwards.
they do weigh in at over 1.5 tonnes though so I would expect them to go through consumables quite quickly on a track, although if you are going to make a true track monster you could quickly shed the weight.
Have alook over at 350z-uk.com to get some more views and experience. Few nice cars for sale on there at the moment too...

The 350Z uses the same brembro brakes as the blobeye scoob STI. Be ready for a big surprise at how much they cost and how long they last
Performance Friction front/rear pads: £131/£67. Think the Nissan OEM front pads are just under £100.
Can get Dixcel discs from someone on 350z-uk.com for £315, rears for £300.
How long are they going to last?!
