I need a cheap 4x4 load lugger, dog carrier, and have settled on one of these.

A couple of questions:

  • Anything I should be checking for when I look at some.
  • Any rough ideas of insurance - never had an import before. Do imports carry a big premium. For info: live in the sticks, aged 36, no convictions.
  • What's the road tax on these - circa 98, 99, 2000 models.
  • Do imports need undersealing in the UK?
  • How do imports cope with UK pump fuel - will I need a remap?
DCY of York is my nearest specialist - any views on them / happy / unhappy customers?

Thanks

Rich

I was after one, but now my milage will increase its just going to be too expensive, shame as I really want one too.

If the car is over 10 years old you dont need an SVA test, these are expensive and bump the price up so go for a 99 or early 2000.
Yes they need undersealing, a foglight fitting, and you are best having it changed to MPH from KPH, this is a simple 4 wire chip and costs about 30 quid. It also delimits it from 112MPH (180KPH).
DCY are expensive, He will be asking about 5K. He is near me, well overpriced IMO.
I imported through Mashamoto, You choose what you want, spec/colour/ miles/ budget etc and they can do the rest.
I was quoted between £3250 and £3500 for one with about 50000 miles and in good grade 4 condition.
That price is on the road, speedo changed and fog light/ MOT tax etc.
Underseal I have done locally for about 50 quid.
You may want an alarm, thats £250 from Mashamoto for a Cat 1.
They use superunleaded but i hear of a company that remaps them to UK fuels, and gives more power too.
There is an E tune model with 320BHP standard.
Insurance wont be cheap, but shouldnt be too shocking for a 280BHP twin turbo.
Hope that helps.

Thanks thumbup They have an older model 97 old shape at 4k. Only thing is it has aftermarket suspension, which I'm never really keen on on a road car when it's been lowered. I'm going for a looksee today. Mashamoto is close enough for me too so another option.

I bought a '99 GTB about 6 weeks ago, love it so far....

Have averaged about 25-28 mpg depending on how I drive it, 30mpg is possible on the motorway though. Am thinking about converting it to run on LPG at the mo, will see how many miles I do in the next couple of months first though. Insurance was pretty reasonable about £350 I think.

The Legacy owners club here www.uklegacy.com was very useful when researching before buying the car.

For mine road tax will be £205, as it was registered pre 2001.

Oh, and to add, I've been really impressed at how quick the car is. I've had some fairly quick stuff previously, and this feels just as quick with the added bonus that it sounds fantastic!

Thats interesting.
I need a car to do about 13000 miles in 6 months, but then it may not be used much as i am changing jobs, so maybe its still an option. They are good value, and if I base it on paying for petrol instead of paying more by buying a diesel car, maybe I could justify it?

Arse. I went to look at the GTV - way too extreme for what I wanted, but it did go very well. The it all went very very wrong. I was drooling over an Evo 7 RS fitted with sensible mods - big brakes and air con. Apart from that it was mint and bog stock.

Barrie saw me drooling and offered me a quick go. Bugger, my budget of 4k has just been shot to hell and a larger than expected dividend will be being paid and I'll be buying tomorrow.

What a car though. Coming of the back of a Westy Blackbird I was expecting quickish but numb 4 door. fk me (pardon me language) but that thing dances - what a car. The last time I grinned like that was after my first skydive. It's pretty rapid, but what impresses in the feedback it offers the driver - wow, simply wow. The only negatives are that being bog stock the interior is ste. An FQ interior, courtesy of ebay, is on the cards though.

I'll post up some pic when I take delivery.

In my defence, it is 4x4 and will fit the family in (without the dogs). The kennels are nice round here though hehe

Yeah - I need to call him to confirm today, but laid up in between puking. Wouldn't be good form to get halfway through a conversation and then run off. My son has given me DNV.

Not the cheapest car I found after I looked around after deciding on it, but the car is the right spec and importantly it's close if anything breaks on it. Barry comes across as a nice genuine bloke too.

This one - and the gauges will be going.
